One challenge of biology, medicine, and economics is that the systems treated by these serious scientific disciplines have no perfect metronome in time and no perfect spatial architecture—crystalline or otherwise. Nonetheless, as if by magic, out of nothing but randomness one finds remarkably fine-tuned processes in time and remarkably fine-tuned structures in space. Further, many of these processes and structures have the remarkable feature of “switching” from one behavior to another as if by magic. The past century has, philosophically, been concerned with placing aside the human tendency to see the universe as a fine-tuned machine. Here we will address the challenge of uncovering how, through randomness (albeit, as we shall see, strongly correlated randomness), one can arrive at some of the many spatial and temporal patterns in biology, medicine, and economics and even begin to characterize the switching phenomena that enables a system to pass from one state to another. Inspired by principles developed by A. Nihat Berker and scores of other statistical physicists in recent years, we discuss some applications of correlated randomness to understand switching phenomena in various fields. Specifically, we present evidence from experiments and from computer simulations supporting the hypothesis that water’s anomalies are related to a switching point (which is not unlike the “tipping point” immortalized by Malcolm Gladwell), and that the bubbles in economic phenomena that occur on all scales are not “outliers” (another Gladwell immortalization). Though more speculative, we support the idea of disease as arising from some kind of yet-to-be-understood complex switching phenomenon, by discussing data on selected examples, including heart disease and Alzheimer disease. 相似文献

Various types ordering processes in systems with large fluctuation are overviewed. Generally, the so-called order–disorder phase transition takes place in competition between the interaction causing the system be ordered and the entropy causing a random disturbance. Nature of the phase transition strongly depends on the type of fluctuation which is determined by the structure of the order parameter of the system. As to the critical property of phase transitions, the concept “universality of the critical phenomena” is well established. However, we still find variety of features of ordering processes. In this article, we study effects of various mechanisms which bring large fluctuation in the system, e.g., continuous symmetry of the spin in low dimensions, contradictions among interactions (frustration), randomness of the lattice, quantum fluctuations, and a long range interaction in off-lattice systems. 相似文献

Using a Wang-Landau entropic sampling scheme, we investigate the effects of quenched bond randomness on a particular case of a triangular Ising model with nearest- (Jnn) and next-nearest-neighbor (Jnnn) antiferromagnetic interactions. We consider the case R=Jnnn/Jnn=1, for which the pure model is known to have a columnar ground state where rows of nearest-neighbor spins up and down alternate and undergo a weak first-order phase transition from the ordered to the paramagnetic state. With the introduction of quenched bond randomness we observe the effects signaling the expected conversion of the first-order phase transition to a second-order phase transition and using the Lee-Kosterlitz method, we quantitatively verify this conversion. The emerging, under random bonds, continuous transition shows a strongly saturating specific heat behavior, corresponding to a negative exponent α, and belongs to a new distinctive universality class with ν=1.135(11), γ/ν=1.744(9), and β/ν=0.124(8). Thus, our results for the critical exponents support an extensive but weak universality and the emerged continuous transition has the same magnetic critical exponent (but a different thermal critical exponent) as a wide variety of two-dimensional (2d) systems without and with quenched disorder. 相似文献

This paper provides a constructive procedure for the computation of approximate solutions of random time-dependent hyperbolic mean square partial differential problems. Based on the theoretical representation of the solution as an infinite random improper integral, obtained via the random Fourier transform method, a double approximation process is implemented. Firstly, a random Gauss-Hermite quadrature is applied, and then, the evaluations at the nodes of the integrand are approximated by using a random Störmer numerical method. Community detection is of great significance in understanding the structure of the network. Label propagation algorithm (LPA) is a classical and effective method, but it has the problems of randomness and instability. An improved label propagation algorithm named LPA-MNI is proposed in this study by combining the modularity function and node importance with the original LPA. LPA-MNI first identify the initial communities according to the value of modularity. Subsequently, the label propagation is used to cluster the remaining nodes that have not been assigned to initial communities. Meanwhile, node importance is used to improve the node order of label updating and the mechanism of label selecting when multiple labels are contained by the maximum number of nodes. Extensive experiments are performed on twelve real-world networks and eight groups of synthetic networks, and the results show that LPA-MNI has better accuracy, higher modularity, and more reasonable community numbers when compared with other six algorithms. These equations involve average terms of products of turbulent fluctuations in some physical parameters in a large degree.
