On the Stability of Bifurcation Diagrams of Vanishing Flattening Points

On a smooth surface in Euclidean 3-space, we consider vanishing curves whose projections on a given plane are small circles centered at the origin. The bifurcations diagram of a parameter-dependent surface is the set of parameters and radii of the circles corresponding to curves with degenerate flattening points. Solving a problem due to Arnold, we find a normal form of the first nontrivial example of a flattening bifurcation diagram, which contains one continuous invariant.

Invariant Simultaneous Solutions of Evolution Equations of Integrable Hierarchies

We construct classical point symmetry groups for joint pairs of evolution equations (systems of equations) of integrable hierarchies related to the auxiliary equation of the method of the inverse problem of second order. For the two cases: the hierarchy of Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equations and of the systems of Kaup equations, we construct simultaneous solutions invariant with respect to the symmetry group. The problem of the construction of these solutions can be reduced, respectively, to the first and second Painlevé equations depending on a parameter. The Painlevé equations are supplemented by the linear evolution equations defining the deformation of the solution of the corresponding Painlevé equation.     

The Structure of the (Outer) Automorphism Group of a Bieberbach Group

Referring to Tits alternative, we develop a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether the normalizer of a finite group of integral matrices is polycyclic-by-finite or is containing a non-Abelian free group. This result is of fundamental importance to conclude whether the (outer) automorphism group of a Bieberbach group is polycyclic-by-finite or has a non-cyclic free subgroup.     

Detecting Mass Points of Representing Measures

We discuss a possibility of deciding whether measures representing a moment sequence or realizing orthogonality of polynomials have atoms. This is done on the real line and in several variables.     

Approximating weak Chebyshev subspaces by Chebyshev subspaces

We examine to what extent finite-dimensional spaces defined on locally compact subsets of the line and possessing various weak Chebyshev properties (involving sign changes, zeros, alternation of best approximations, and peak points) can be uniformly approximated by a sequence of spaces having related properties.

A Quasi-Newton Penalty Barrier Method for Convex Minimization Problems

We describe an infeasible interior point algorithm for convex minimization problems. The method uses quasi-Newton techniques for approximating the second derivatives and providing superlinear convergence. We propose a new feasibility control of the iterates by introducing shift variables and by penalizing them in the barrier problem. We prove global convergence under standard conditions on the problem data, without any assumption on the behavior of the algorithm.
