Commutativity of the Arens product in lattice ordered algebras

Let be an Abelian Archimedean lattice ordered algebra. The order bidual furnished with the Arens product is again a lattice ordered algebra. We show that the order continuous order bidual is Abelian. This solves an open problem and improves a result of Scheffold, who proved it for the case of normed lattice ordered algebras. The proof is based on the up-down-up approximation of positive elements in the order continuous order bidual by elements in the canonical image of in Components of positive elements in are characterized and the result is applied to the Arens product of -and almost -algebras.

Cut sharing for multistage stochastic linear programs with interstage dependency

Multistage stochastic programs with interstage independent random parameters have recourse functions that do not depend on the state of the system. Decomposition-based algorithms can exploit this structure by sharing cuts (outer-linearizations of the recourse function) among different scenario subproblems at the same stage. The ability to share cuts is necessary in practical implementations of algorithms that incorporate Monte Carlo sampling within the decomposition scheme. In this paper, we provide methodology for sharing cuts in decomposition algorithms for stochastic programs that satisfy certain interstage dependency models. These techniques enable sampling-based algorithms to handle a richer class of multistage problems, and may also be used to accelerate the convergence of exact decomposition algorithms. Integral decomposition in polyhedra

We say that a polyhedronP satisfies weak integral decomposition if whenever an integral vector is the sum ofk vectors inP it is also the sum ofk integral vectors inP. This property is related to rounding results for packing and covering problems. We study the property and two related properties, and give results concerning integral polymatroids, totally unimodular matrices and network flows, pairs of strongly-base-orderable matroids, and branchings in directed graphs.

Subspaces of Normed Riesz Spaces

It will be shown that a normed partially ordered vector space is linearly, norm, and order isomorphic to a subspace of a normed Riesz space if and only if its positive cone is closed and its norm p satisfies p(x)p(y) for all x and y with -yxy. A similar characterization of the subspaces of M-normed Riesz spaces is given. With aid of the first characterization, Krein's lemma on directedness of norm dual spaces can be directly derived from the result for normed Riesz spaces. Further properties of the norms ensuing from the characterization theorem are investigated. Also a generalization of the notion of Riesz norm is studied as an analogue of the r-norm from the theory of spaces of operators. Both classes of norms are used to extend results on spaces of operators between normed Riesz spaces to a setting with partially ordered vector spaces. Finally, a partial characterization of the subspaces of Riesz spaces with Riesz seminorms is given.
