Large‐eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes simulation (RANS) with different turbulence models (including the standard k?ε, the standard k?ω, the shear stress transport k?ω (SST k?ω), and Spalart–Allmaras (S–A) turbulence models) have been employed to compute the turbulent flow of a two‐dimensional turbulent boundary layer over an unswept bump. The predictions of the simulations were compared with available experimental measurements in the literature. The comparisons of the LES and the SST k?ω model including the mean flow and turbulence stresses are in satisfied agreements with the available measurements. Although the flow experiences a strong adverse pressure gradient along the rear surface, the boundary layer is unique in that intermittent detachment occurring near the wall. The numerical results indicate that the boundary layer is not followed by mean‐flow separation or incipient separation as shown from the numerical results. The resolved turbulent shear stress is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, though the computational result of LES shows that its peak is overpredicted near the trailing edge of the bump, while the other used turbulence models, except the standard k?ε, underpredicts it. Analysis of the numerical results from LES confirms the experimental data, in which the existence of internal layers over the bump surface upstream of the summit and along the downstream flat plate. It also demonstrates that the quasi‐step increase in skin friction is due to perturbations in pressure gradient. The surface curvature enhances the near‐wall shear production of turbulent stresses, and is responsible for the formation of the internal layers. The aim of the present work is to examine the response and prediction capability of LES with the dynamic eddy viscosity model as a sub‐grid scale to the complex turbulence structure with the presence of streamline curvature generated by a bumpy surface. Aiming to reduce the computational costs with focus on the mean behavior of the non‐equilibrium turbulent boundary layer of flow over the bump surface, the present investigation also explains the best capability of one of the used RANS turbulence models to capture the driving mechanism for the surprisingly rapid return to equilibrium over the trailing flat plate found in the measurements. A transition model for describing wake-induced transition is presented based on the SST turbulence model by Menter and two dynamic equations for intermittency: one for near-wall intermittency and one for free-stream intermittency. In the Navier-Stokes equations, the total intermittency factor, which is the sum of the two, multiplies the turbulent viscosity computed by the turbulence model. The quality of the transition model is illustrated on the T106A test cascade for two Reynolds numbers, using experimental results by Stieger and Hodson for transition mainly due to kinematic wake impact on a separation bubble. The quality of the model is also revealed on the T106D test cascade using experimental results from Hilgenfeld, Stadtmuller and Fottner for wake turbulence induced transition. The test cases differ in pitch to chord ratio, Reynolds number and inlet free-stream turbulence intensity, causing different transition mechanisms. The unsteady results are presented in space-time diagrams of shape factor and wall shear stress on the suction side. The results show the capability of the model to capture the physics of unsteady transition in separated state. Inevitable shortcomings are revealed as well.  相似文献

The transient, three-dimensional scavenging flow inside a novel two-stroke engine has been investigated both experimentally in a scaled water model as well as numerically using a commercial CFD code incorporating an unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) formulation. The scavenging flow consists of 16 round jets in close proximity of each other and the cylinder wall, developing from the top of the combustion chamber down towards the exhaust ports located along the wall at the bottom of the cylinder. Flow visualization of the scavenging flow was performed using a scaled fixed-piston water model and was used as a means of validating the URANS simulations themselves. The flow visualization experiments provided insight into the complex jet–jet and jet–wall interactions within the engine cylinder. These interactions were not as well predicted by the CFD simulations. In fact, the CFD simulations were found to significantly under-predict the turbulent mixing between the jets. This suggests that unsteady-RANS formulations are incapable of reproducing the large-scale and unsteady mixing structures associated with the vortex shedding between the closely-spaced jets.  相似文献

In the current study, model expressions for fifth-order velocity moments obtained from the truncated Gram-Charlier series expansions model for a turbulent flow field probability density function are validated using data from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a planar turbulent flow in a strained channel. Simplicity of the model expressions, the lack of unknown coefficients, and their applicability to non-Gaussian turbulent flows make this approach attractive to use for closing turbulent models based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The study confirms validity of the model expressions. It also shows that the imposed flow deformation improves an agreement between the model and DNS profiles for the fifth-order moments in the flow buffer zone including when the flow reverses its direction. The study reveals sensitivity of particularly odd velocity moments to the grid resolution. A new length scale is proposed as a criterion for the grid generation near the wall and in the other flow areas dominated by high mean velocity gradients when higher-order statistics have to be collected from DNS.  相似文献

We consider turbulent flows in a differentially heated Taylor-Couette system with an axial Poiseuille flow. The numerical approach is based on the Reynolds Stress Modeling (RSM) of [Elena and Schiestel, 1996] and [Schiestel and Elena, 1997] widely validated in various rotor-stator cavities with throughflow ( [Poncet, 2005], [Poncet et al., 2005] and [Haddadi and Poncet, 2008]) and heat transfer (Poncet and Schiestel, 2007). To show the capability of the present code, our numerical predictions are compared very favorably to the velocity measurements of Escudier and Gouldson (1995) in the isothermal case, for both the mean and turbulent fields. The RSM model improves, in particular, the predictions of the k-ε model of Naser (1997). Then, the second order model is applied for a large range of rotational Reynolds (3744 ? Rei ? 37,443) and Prandtl numbers (0.01 ? Pr ? 12), flow rate coefficient (0 ? Cw ? 30,000) in a very narrow cavity of radius ratio s = Ri/Ro = 0.961 and aspect ratio L = (Ro − Ri)/h = 0.013, where Ri and Ro are the radii of the inner and outer cylinders respectively and h is the cavity height. Temperature gradients are imposed between the incoming fluid and the inner and outer cylinders. The mean hydrodynamic and thermal fields reveal three distinct regions across the radial gap with a central region of almost constant axial and tangential mean velocities and constant mean temperature. Turbulence, which is weakly anisotropic, is mainly concentrated in that region and vanishes towards the cylinders. The mean velocity distributions are not clearly affected by the rotational Reynolds number and the flow rate coefficient. The effects of the flow parameters on the thermal field are more noticeable and considered in details. Correlations for the averaged Nusselt numbers along both cylinders are finally provided according to the flow control parameters Rei, Cw, and Pr.  相似文献

The computational cost of large eddy simulation (LES) increases rapidly with the Reynolds number when applied to attached boundary layers. This problem can be avoided by use of a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) model in the inner part of the boundary layer, which reduces the computational cost drastically. Such hybrid LES/RANS methods yield accurate results in general, but suffer from an artificial buffer layer and a shift in the velocity profile around the modeling interface. This velocity shift can be removed by use of additional forcing, but the results are very sensitive to the forcing amplitude.

The present paper proposes a feedback algorithm which efficiently finds the appropriate amplitude and thus yields accurate flow statistics. The feedback algorithm is relatively robust, both in that it is insensitive to the values of the parameters involved and that it yields accurate results with different forcing fields and for different Reynolds numbers. It is argued that the feedback algorithm is consistent with the underlying assumptions of hybrid LES/RANS and that it does not introduce additional empiricism into the method.  相似文献

A Continuous Sensitivity Equation (CSE) method is presented for shape parameters in turbulent wall-bounded flows modeled with the standard k? turbulence model with wall functions. Differentiation of boundary conditions and their complex dependencies on shape parameters, including the two-velocity scale wall functions, is presented in details along with the appropriate methodology required for the CSE method. To ensure accuracy, grid convergence and to reduce computational time, an adaptive finite-element method driven by asymptotically exact error estimations is used. The adaptive process is controlled by error estimates on both flow and sensitivity solutions. Firstly, the proposed approach is applied on a problem with a closed-form solution, derived using the Method of the Manufactured Solution to perform Code Verification. Results from adaptive grid refinement studies show Verification of flow and sensitivity solvers, error estimators and the adaptive strategy. Secondly, we consider turbulent flows around a square cross-section cylinder in proximity of a solid wall. We examine the quality of the numerical solutions by performing Solution Verification and Validation. Then, Sensitivity Analysis of these turbulent flows is performed to investigate the ability of the method to deal with non-trivial geometrical changes. Sensitivity information is used to estimate uncertainties in the flow solution caused by uncertainties in the shape parameter and to perform fast evaluation of flows on nearby configurations.  相似文献

Using a priori analyses of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data, a Reynolds stress model (RSM) is developed to account for the influence of polymer additives on turbulent flow over a wide range of flow conditions. The Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) rheological constitutive model is utilized to evaluate the polymer contribution to the stress tensor. Thirteen DNS data sets are used to analyze the budgets of elastic stress–velocity gradient correlations as well as Reynolds stress and dissipation transport. Closures are developed in the framework of the RSM model for all the required unknown and non-linear terms. The polymer stresses, velocity profiles, turbulent flow statistics and the percentage of friction drag reduction predicted by the RSM model are in good agreement with present and those obtained from independent DNS data over a wide range of rheological and flow parameters.  相似文献
