On nonoscillating integrals for computing inhomogeneous Airy functions

Integral representations are considered of solutions of the inhomogeneous Airy differential equation . The solutions of these equations are also known as Scorer functions. Certain functional relations for these functions are used to confine the discussion to one function and to a certain sector in the complex plane. By using steepest descent methods from asymptotics, the standard integral representations of the Scorer functions are modified in order to obtain nonoscillating integrals for complex values of . In this way stable representations for numerical evaluations of the functions are obtained. The methods are illustrated with numerical results.

     

On Logarithmic Smoothing of the Maximum Function

We consider the maximum function f resulting from a finite number of smooth functions. The logarithmic barrier function of the epigraph of f gives rise to a smooth approximation g of f itself, where >0 denotes the approximation parameter. The one-parametric family g converges – relative to a compact subset – uniformly to the function f as tends to zero. Under nondegeneracy assumptions we show that the stationary points of g and f correspond to each other, and that their respective Morse indices coincide. The latter correspondence is obtained by establishing smooth curves x() of stationary points for g , where each x() converges to the corresponding stationary point of f as tends to zero. In case of a strongly unique local minimizer, we show that the nondegeneracy assumption may be relaxed in order to obtain a smooth curve x().     

Hyperplane Sections of Kantor's Unitary Ovoids

The projective plane is embedded as a variety of projective points in , where M is a nine dimensional -module for the groupG=GL(3,q ²). The hyperplane sections of thisvariety and their stabilizers in the group G aredetermined. When q 2 (mod 3) one such hyperplanesection is a member of the family of Kantor's unitary ovoids.We furtherdetermine all sections whereD has codimension two in M and demonstratethat these are never empty. Consequences are drawn for Kantor'sovoids.     

On support points of univalent functions and a disproof of a conjecture of Bombieri

We consider the linear functional for on the set of normalized univalent functions in the unit disk and use the result to disprove a conjecture of Bombieri.

     

Decreasing flow invariant sets and fixed points of quasimonotone increasing operators

In this paper, we obtain some new results about the existence of multiple fixed points of a kind of quasimonotone increasing operator by the new method of decreasing flow invariant set.

     

Nearest q-Flat to m Points

Recently, Bradley and Mangasarian studied the problem of finding the nearest plane to m given points in ⁿ in the least square sense. They showed that the problem reduces to finding the least eigenvalue and associated eigenvector of a certain n×n symmetric positive-semidefinite matrix. We extend this result to the general problem of finding the nearest q-flat to m points, with 0qn–1.     

A continuous decomposition of the Menger curve into pseudo-arcs

It is proved that the Menger universal curve admits a continuous decomposition into pseudo-arcs with the quotient space homeomorphic to .
