Regularity of minima: An invitation to the dark side of the calculus of variations

I am presenting a survey of regularity results for both minima of variational integrals, and solutions to non-linear elliptic, and sometimes parabolic, systems of partial differential equations. I will try to take the reader to the Dark Side... Optical properties of polarization-dependent geometric phase elements with partially polarized light

The behavior of geometric phase elements illuminated with partially polarized monochromatic beams is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The element discussed in this paper is composed of wave plates with π-retardation and a space-variant orientation angle. We found that a beam emerging from such an element comprises two polarization orders; right-and left-handed circularly polarized states with conjugate geometric phase modification. This phase equals twice the orientation angle of the space-variant wave plate comprising the element. Apart from the two polarization orders, the emerging beam coherence polarization matrix includes a “vectorial interference matrix” which contains information concerning the correlation between the two orthogonal, circularly polarized portions of the incident beam. In this paper we measure this correlation by a simple interference experiment. In addition, we found that the equivalent mutual intensity of the emerging beam is modulated according to the geometric phase induced by the element. Other interesting phenomena concerning propagation will be discussed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The experiment made use of a spherical geometric phase element that was realized by use of a space-variant subwavelength grating illuminated with CO₂ laser radiation of 10.6 μm wavelength.     

Limit theorems for partially hyperbolic systems

We consider a large class of partially hyperbolic systems containing, among others, affine maps, frame flows on negatively curved manifolds, and mostly contracting diffeomorphisms. If the rate of mixing is sufficiently high, the system satisfies many classical limit theorems of probability theory.

     

Analysis of a Young–Michelson tandem interferometer

In a Young–Michelson tandem interferometer a Michelson interferometer is illuminated through a pair of Young slits. The pattern produced by this set-up is analyzed theoretically. The consequences of small misalignments and uncompensated arms in the Michelson interferometer are studied. The effects of the spatial and temporal partial coherence of the source are also explored. Experimental results using a laser source are shown to be in good agreement with the predicted theoretical calculations.     

Partial sums of hypergeometric series of unit argument

The asymptotic behaviour of partial sums of generalized hypergeometric series of unit argument is investigated.

     

ON THE EQUATION □φ = |vφ|2 IN FOUR SPACE DIMENSIONS

It turns out that for the general equation s must satisfyThis is due to Ponce and Sideris (when n = 3) and Tataru (when n ≥ 5). The purpose of thispaper is to supplement with a proof in the case n = 2, 4.     

Oscillation of certain partial difference equations

In this paper we consider a class of nonlinear delay partial difference equations and a class of linear delay partial difference equations with variable coefficients, which may change sign. We obtain oscillation criteria for these equations. There are no results for the oscillation of these equations up to now.     

四种多变量校准方法在FTIR多组分分析中的性能比较

本文对四种多变量校准方法－－经典最小二乘法（CLS），偏最小二乘法（PLS），卡尔曼滤波法（KFM）以及人工神经网络法（ANN）－－在多组分浓度分析方面的性能进行了比较。选择五种红外谱图严重混叠的大气有机毒物－－1，3－丁二烯，苯，邻二甲苯，氯苯和丙烯醛－－作为分析对象。分别计算各种方法对该5组分体系的平均预测误差MPE和平均相对误差MRE进行比较。结果表明，偏最小二乘法在处理这类问题中是最稳健的方法。
