We use supercritical branching processes with random walk steps of geometrically decreasing size to construct random measures. Special cases of our construction give close relatives of the super-(spherically symmetric stable) processes. However, other cases can produce measures with very smooth densities in any dimension.

The Patterson–Sullivan Embedding and Minimal Volume Entropy for Outer Space

Motivated by Bonahon’s result for hyperbolic surfaces, we construct an analogue of the Patterson–Sullivan–Bowen–Margulis map from the Culler–Vogtmann outer space CV (F _k ) into the space of projectivized geodesic currents on a free group. We prove that this map is a continuous embedding and thus obtain a new compactification of the outer space. We also prove that for every k ≥ 2 the minimum of the volume entropy of the universal covers of finite connected volume-one metric graphs with fundamental group of rank k and without degree-one vertices is equal to (3k − 3) log 2 and that this minimum is realized by trivalent graphs with all edges of equal lengths, and only by such graphs. A saddle-point theorem with application to structural optimization

The relaxation for optimal complicance design is independent of whether the underlying elastic problem is formulated in terms of displacements or strains. For the purposes of numerical experimentation and computation, it may be advantageous to formulate optimal design problems in terms of displacements as is done in Ref. 1. The relaxed problem delivered by the displacement-based formulation is of min-min-max type. Because of this, efficient numerical implementation is hampered by the order of the last two min-max operations. We show here that the last two min-max operations may be exchanged, facilitating an efficient numerical algorithm. We remark that the rigorous results given here corroborate the numerical methods and experiments given in Ref. 1.This work was supported by NSF Grant DMS-92-05158.     

Unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis:The importance of “preoperative” voice therapy

This preliminary retrospective study of 19 female patients and 22male patients with unilateral recurrent nerve lesions demonstrated the promise of objective measurements in predicting the need for surgery, the efficacy of voice therapy in ameliorating vocal symptoms, and the effects of therapy in conjunction with surgery. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of the female patients and 64% of the male patients did not elect to have surgery. Outcome satisfaction of nonsurgical and surgical patients appeared to be similar. The data from this study support the importance of preoperative therapy for patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

On Grothendieck Subspaces

The modulus of an order bounded functional on a Riesz space is the sum of a pair of Riesz homomorphisms if and only if the kernel of this functional is a Grothendieck subspace of the ambient Riesz space. On stochastic integral representation of stable processes with sample paths in Banach spaces

Certain path properties of a symmetric α-stable process X(t) = ∫_Sh(t, s) dM(s), t T, are studied in terms of the kernel h. The existence of an appropriate modification of the kernel h enables one to use results from stable measures on Banach spaces in studying X. Bounds for the moments of the norm of sample paths of X are obtained. This yields definite bounds for the moments of a double α-stable integral. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions for the absolute continuity of sample paths of X are given. Along with the above stochastic integral representation of stable processes, the representation of stable random vectors due to[13], Ann. Probab.9, 624–632) is extensively used and the relationship between these two representations is discussed.
