On error operators related to the arbitrary functions principle

The error on a real quantity Y due to the graduation of the measuring instrument may be asymptotically represented, when the graduation is regular and fines down, by a Dirichlet form on R whose square field operator does not depend on the probability law of Y as soon as this law possesses a continuous density. This feature is related to the “arbitrary functions principle” (Poincaré, Hopf). We give extensions of this property to Rd and to the Wiener space for some approximations of the Brownian motion. This gives new approximations of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck gradient. These results apply to the discretization of some stochastic differential equations encountered in mechanics.     

The Micro-Theory of Ultra-Short Pulse Propagating in Nonlinear Fiber

The modified quantum nonlinear Schrodinger equation of ultra-short pulse propagating in fiber is derived using dispersion relation and the Hamiltonian of the transmission system. The derived equation is solved with linearization approximation, and modulation instability is analyzed. The equation is also solved with Hartree approximation. The results indicate that pulse power, loss and self-steeping effect change the critical frequency, the maximum gain and the gain spectrum range, but the third order dispersion has no effect on modulation instability. The expectation value of optical field is average of a set of modified classical solitons, and higher order terms change the amplitude, pulse position and phase of soliton.     

Boundary control of a hyperbolic system with time lags

This paper considers an optimal boundary control problem fora hyperbolic system in which constant time lags appear in thestate equation and in the boundary condition simultaneously.Making use of Lion's scheme, necessary and sufficient conditionsof optimality for the Neumann problem are derived.

A fixed-point equation for the high-temperature phase of discrete lattice spin systems

A fixed-point equation on an infinite-dimensional space is proposed as an alternative to the usual definition of the infinite-volume limit in discrete lattice spin systems in the high-temperature phase. It is argued heuristically that the free energy and correlation functions one obtains by solving this equation agree with the usual definitions of these quantities. A theorem is then proved that says that if a certain finite-volume condition is satisfied, then this fixed-point equation has a solution and the resulting free energy is analytic in the parameters in the Hamiltonian. For particular values of the temperature this finite-volume condition may be checked with the help of a computer. The two-dimensional Ising model is considered as a test case, and it is shown that the finite-volume condition is satisfied for0.77 _critical.     

A remark on the KAM theorem applied to a four-vortex system

We consider a planar four-vortex system with unit intensities and apply the KAM theorem for two-dimensional tori with fixed frequency. We obtain a rigorous lower bound for the stochasticity threshold of the torus with rotation number=(5—1)/2 and compare our result with numerical experiments.     

Dynamics of the current-driven Josephson junction

The irreversible macroscopic dynamics of the Josephson junction coupled to external wires acting as a current source is derived rigorously from the underlying microscopic Hamiltonian quantum mechanics. The external systems are treated in the singular coupling limit. The use of this limit is explicitly justified via an interpretation of the singular coupling limit in terms of the relative magnitudes of system, reservoir, and coupling energies. The qualitative behavior of the macroscopic dynamical equations is shown to depend sensitively and crucially on the interaction between the wires and the superconductors and on the size of the wires: the dc Josephson effect only happens when one lets Cooper pairs be driven into the junction by collective (i.e., small) reservoirs.
