The Tracial Topological Rank of C*-Algebras

We introduce the notion of tracial topological rank for C*-algebras.In the commutative case, this notion coincides with the coveringdimension. Inductive limits of C*-algebrasof the form PM_n(C(X))P,where X is a compact metric space with dim X k, and P is aprojection in M_n(C(X)), have tracial topological rank no morethan k. Non-nuclear C*-algebras can have small tracial topologicalrank. It is shown that if A is a simple unital C*-algebra withtracial topological rank k (< ), then

(i) A is quasidiagonal,

(ii) A has stable rank 1,

(iii) A has weakly unperforatedK₀(A),

(iv) A has the following Fundamental Comparabilityof Blackadar:if p, q A are two projections with (p) < (q)for all tracialstates on A, then p q

Distribution of Cardinalities of Row Spaces of Boolean Matrices of Order n

Let R(A) denote the row space of a Boolean matrix A of order n. We show that if n 7, then the cardinality |R(A)| (2^n–1 - 2^n–5, 2^n–1 - 2^n–6) U (2^n–1 - 2^n–6, 2^n–1). Sums of squares of regular functions on real algebraic varieties

Let be an affine algebraic variety over (or any other real closed field ). We ask when it is true that every positive semidefinite (psd) polynomial function on is a sum of squares (sos). We show that for the answer is always negative if has a real point. Also, if is a smooth non-rational curve all of whose points at infinity are real, the answer is again negative. The same holds if is a smooth surface with only real divisors at infinity. The ``compact' case is harder. We completely settle the case of smooth curves of genus : If such a curve has a complex point at infinity, then every psd function is sos, provided the field is archimedean. If is not archimedean, there are counter-examples of genus .

     

Generation, detection and characterization of optical minimum shift keying data format

This paper presents the detailed principle on the generation and detection of optical minimum shift keying (MSK) format for high-speed and high spectral efficiency WDM systems. 10.7 Gb/s optical MSK data is successfully generated by experiment using the proposed scheme. The results show that optical MSK signal exhibits very compact optical spectrum, which is promising for high spectral efficiency WDM applications. Simulation results on dispersion and nonlinear tolerance comparison confirm that MSK signal has better dispersion tolerance and nonlinear tolerance compared with 50% duty cycle return-to-zero differential phase shift keying (RZ-DPSK) and 50% duty cycle RZ on-off-keying (RZ-OOK) formats.     

A regression approach to ROC surface, with applications to Alzheimer’s disease

We consider the estimation of three-dimensional ROC surfaces for continuous tests given covariates.Three way ROC analysis is important in our motivating example where patients with Alzheimer’s disease are usually classified into three categories and should receive different category-specific medical treatment.There has been no discussion on how covariates affect the three way ROC analysis.We propose a regression framework induced from the relationship between test results and covariates.We consider several practical cases and the corresponding inference procedures.Simulations are conducted to validate our methodology.The application on the motivating example illustrates clearly the age and sex effects on the accuracy for Mini-Mental State Examination of Alzheimer’s disease.     

Group extensions and free actions by finite groups on solvmanifolds

The purpose of this paper is to generalize Yalçin's result [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 352 , 2689–2700 (2000)] from tori to solvmanifolds. As a result, we prove that if (?_p)^r acts freely on a solvmanifold M of dimension n, then r ≤ n (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)     

PSP对癌症病人化/放疗毒性反应的数据统计分析

按WHO抗癌药急性及亚急性毒性分级标准 ,对 650例化、放疗肿瘤患者分别作了治疗前后毒性反应的总分值统计。结果加服PSP组 ( 557例 )的疗后总分值为837,低于疗前的 962 ;而 93例阳性对照组 (加服鲨肝醇 )疗前总分为 157,疗后为 2 4 1,疗后总分高于疗前。用Wilcoxon两样本秩和统计法检验 ,PSP组和对照组间具有极显著差异 ,表明PSP对比、放疗药物引起的毒副反应有明显降低效应。     

The expectation hypothesis of interest rates and network theory: The case of Brazil

This paper investigates the topological properties of the Brazilian term structure of interest rates network. We build the minimum spanning tree (MST), which is based on the concept of ultrametricity, using the correlation matrix for interest rates of different maturities. We show that the short-term interest rate is the most important within the interest rates network, which is in line with the Expectation Hypothesis of interest rates. Furthermore, we find that the Brazilian interest rates network forms clusters by maturity.
