New integrable cases of a Cremona transformation: a finite-order orbits analysis

We analyse the properties of a particular birational mapping of two variables (Cremona transformation) depending on two free parameters ( and ), associated with the action of a discrete group of non-linear (birational) transformations on the entries of a q × q matrix. This mapping originates from the analysis of birational transformations obtained from very simple algebraic calculations, namely taking the inverse of q × q matrices and permuting some of the entries of these matrices. It has been seen to yield weak chaos and integrability. We have found new integrable cases of this Cremona transformation, corresponding to the values of = 0 when , besides the already known values = 0 and = −1, and also arbitrary when = 0. For these cases, one has a foliation of the parameter space in elliptic curves. We give the equations of these elliptic curves. Based on this very example we show how one can find these integrability cases of the Cremona transformation and actually integrate it using a method based on the systematic study of the finite-order conditions of the Cremona transformation. The method is shown to be efficient and straightforward. The various integrability cases are revisited using many different representations of this very mapping (birational transformations, recursion in one variable, …).

Quadratic Hedging Methods for Defaultable Claims

We apply the local risk-minimization approach to defaultable claims and we compare it with intensity-based evaluation formulas and the mean-variance hedging. We solve analytically the problem of finding respectively the hedging strategy and the associated portfolio for the three methods in the case of a default put option with random recovery at maturity.     

A unified theory for coherent systems in reliability I. A generalization for some classic theory: Monotone binary coherent systems

Binary coherent system theory has played an important part in reliability. Its extension to (‘degradable’ or ‘multistate’ or) multinary systems has recently been considered in various papers, through various definitions. This paper lays the foundations of a unified theory for coherent systems by first giving unified arguments to apply and to investigate further binary and multinary systems. Monotone binary systems are introduced and examined by generalizing classic deterministic and probabilistic results. Applications of monotone coherence to the multinary case are proposed in a companion paper with a unified viewpoint on multinary coherent systems. As an indication, monotone constraints are defined with a partition of the component set and some total orderings imposed on the elements of the concerned partition. The discrete partition retrieves the classic theory of (free) binary coherent systems; some constraints defined from component levels lead to multinary coherent systems; some other constraints apply to systems submitted to some ‘common stresses’, e.g. the organizing system of a monotone coherent decomposition.     

The minimal excludant and Schmidt's partition theorem

In this work, we study Schmidt's partition theorem in a combinatorial manner, and find a strong refinement which connects the minimal excludant of ordinary partitions to the length of Schmidt's partitions. As a byproduct, we obtain a bivariate form of an identity recorded in Ramanujan's lost notebook.     

Severi varieties on blow-ups of the symmetric square of an elliptic curve

We prove that certain Severi varieties of nodal curves of positive genus on general blow-ups of the twofold symmetric product of a general elliptic curve are nonempty and smooth of the expected dimension. This result, besides its intrinsic value, is an important preliminary step for the proof of nonemptiness of Severi varieties on general Enriques surfaces.     

Tocochromanols composition in kernels recovered from different apricot varieties: RP-HPLC/FLD and RP-UPLC-ESI/MSn study

Composition of tocochromanols in kernels recovered from 16 different apricot varieties (Prunus armeniaca L.) was studied. Three tocopherol (T) homologues, namely α, γ and δ, were quantified in all tested samples by an RP-HPLC/FLD method. The γ-T was the main tocopherol homologue identified in apricot kernels and constituted approximately 93% of total detected tocopherols. The RP-UPLC-ESI/MSⁿ method detected trace amounts of two tocotrienol homologues α and γ in the apricot kernels. The concentration of individual tocopherol homologues in kernels of different apricots varieties, expressed in mg/100 g dwb, was in the following range: 1.38–4.41 (α-T), 42.48–73.27 (γ-T) and 0.77–2.09 (δ-T). Moreover, the ratio between individual tocopherol homologues α:γ:δ was nearly constant in all varieties and amounted to approximately 2:39:1.     

On the Chow groups of certain cubic fourfolds

This note is about the Chow groups of a certain family of smooth cubic fourfolds. This family is characterized by the property that each cubic fourfold X in the family has an involution such that the induced involution on the Fano variety F of lines in X is symplectic and has a K3 surface S in the fixed locus. The main result establishes a relation between X and S on the level of Chow motives. As a consequence, we can prove finite-dimensionality of the motive of certain members of the family.     

Free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with spherical boundary

We first prove that a compact embedded minimal annulus in meeting two concentric spheres perpendicularly along the boundaries is part of a plane. We also prove that an embedded minimal hypersurface lying outside of a ball is part of either a catenoid or a hyperplane if it is perpendicular to the sphere along the boundary and has only one end that is asymptotic to either a catenoid if , or a hyperplane if .     

Leibniz algebras associated with representations of filiform Lie algebras

In this paper we investigate Leibniz algebras whose quotient Lie algebra is a naturally graded filiform Lie algebra $n_{n,1}$. We introduce a Fock module for the algebra $n_{n,1}$ and provide classification of Leibniz algebras $L$ whose corresponding Lie algebra $L/I$ is the algebra $n_{n,1}$ with condition that the ideal $I$ is a Fock $n_{n,1}$-module, where $I$ is the ideal generated by squares of elements from $L$.We also consider Leibniz algebras with corresponding Lie algebra $n_{n,1}$ and such that the action $I\times n_{n,1}\to I$ gives rise to a minimal faithful representation of $n_{n,1}$. The classification up to isomorphism of such Leibniz algebras is given for the case of $n=4$.
