Generalized nonlinear master equations for local fluctuations: Dimensionality expansions and augmented mean field theory

By application of a projection operator technique we derive a formally exact generalization of the nonlinear mean field master equation introduced recently for the study of local fluctuations in a reacting medium. Our starting point is a phenomenological cell master equation. The results of our theory are applicable to the theory of a fluctuating hydrodynamic reacting system. The mean field equation is placed on a firm theoretical foundation by showing it to be the lowest order approximation in an expansion in the dimensionality of the physical space keeping the product of the number of nearest neighbors (an increasing function of dimensionality) and the typical diffusion coefficient constant. A more accurate nonlinear master equation that allows for the correlation and fluctuations in the environment of a given volume element is derived in the form of an augmented mean field equation.Work supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation.     

1-forms over the moduli space of irreducible connections defined by the spectrum of Dirac operators

Let (P) be the moduli space of irreducible connections of a G-principal bundle P over a closed Riemannian spin manifold M. Let D_A be the Dirac operator of M coupled to a connection A of P and f a smooth function on M. We consider a smooth variation A(u) of A with tangent vector ω and denote T_ω:= (D_A(u)−f) (u=0. The coefficients of the asymptotic expansion of trace (T_ω · e^-t(D_A−f)2) near t=0 define 1-forms a^(k)_f, K=0, 1, 2, … on (P). In this paper we calculate aa⁽⁰⁾_f, a⁽¹⁾_f, a⁽²⁾_f and study some of their properties. For instance using the 1-form a⁽²⁾_f for suitable functions f we obtain a foliation of codimension 5 of the space of G-instantons of S⁴.     

Similarity Transformations of Hermitian Hamiltonians and Pseudo-Hermitian Coupling Between Two Electromagnetic Modes

Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians and pseudo-Hermitian coupling between two electromagnetic modes are analyzed by using similarity transformations of Hermitian Hamiltonians or of Hermitian operators, including a special metric and biorthogonal relations replacing the usual orthogonal relations used in quantum mechanics. The coupling between two electromagnetic (em) modes including certain decay and amplification processes is related to a coupling matrix G which has parity-time (PT) symmetry and which obeys the pseudo-Hermiticity condition ηGη⁻¹ = G ^† where η is a metric. The linear equations representing the pseudo-Hermitian coupling between the two em modes are diagonalized, in the interaction picture, by introducing ‘dressed’ αˉ and β~ operators which have real or pure imaginary eigenfrequencies. The commutation-relations (CR) for the α~ and β~ operators and for the two-mode operators ā and b~, in the interaction picture and under the condition of real eigenfrequencies are obtained by the use of the pseudo-Hermiticity property of the G matrix. These CR for real eigenfrequencies, are preserved in time without any Langevin noise terms.     

Persistence of Eigenvalues and Multiplicity in the Dirichlet Problem for the Laplace Operator on Nonsmooth Domains

We consider the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem for the Laplace operator on a variable nonsmooth domain. We extend a result of Lupo and Micheletti concerning the structure of the set of domain perturbations which leave the multiplicity of an eigenvalue unchanged, and we study the set of perturbations which leave a certain eigenvalue unchanged.
