Summands of Stable Equivalences of Morita Type

A stable equivalence of Morita type between two finite dimensional algebras with no separable summand will be shown to restrict to stable equivalences of Morita type between their summands. We will apply this to prove that stable equivalence of Morita type preserves self-injectivity of algebras and the property of being symmetric.

In fact, Yang–Baxter systems are equivalent with braid systems. In this paper we show that braidings and entwinings of various algebraic structures—in particular, algebra factorisations—can be constructed from a braid system, whence from a Yang–Baxter system as well.     

De Morgan (2, n)-Semigroups of n-Place Functions

An abstract characterization of sets of some partial functions from Aⁿ to A closed with respect to the Menger's and Mann's superpositions and a quasicomplementation is presented.     

Two cores of a nonnegative matrix

We prove that the sequence of eigencones (i.e., cones of nonnegative eigenvectors) of positive powers A^k$A^k$ of a nonnegative square matrix A is periodic both in max algebra and in nonnegative linear algebra. Using an argument of Pullman, we also show that the Minkowski sum of the eigencones of powers of A is equal to the core of A defined as the intersection of nonnegative column spans of matrix powers, also in max algebra. Based on this, we describe the set of extremal rays of the core.     

“Playing the game” of story problems: Coordinating situation-based reasoning with algebraic representation

This study critically examines a key justification used by educational stakeholders for placing mathematics in context –the idea that contextualization provides students with access to mathematical ideas. We present interviews of 24 ninth grade students from a low-performing urban school solving algebra story problems, some of which were personalized to their experiences. Using a situated cognition framework, we discuss how students use informal strategies and situational knowledge when solving story problems, as well how they engage in non-coordinative reasoning where situation-based reasoning is disconnected from symbol-based reasoning and other problem-solving actions. Results suggest that if contextualization is going to provide students with access to algebraic ideas, supports need to be put in place for students to make connections between formal algebraic representation, informal arithmetic-based reasoning, and situational knowledge.

A duality recipe for non-convex variational problems

The aim of this paper is to present a general convexification recipe that can be useful for studying non-convex variational problems. In particular, this allows us to treat such problems by using a powerful primal–dual scheme. Possible further developments and open issues are given.
