Strong instability of solitary waves for nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations and generalized Boussinesq equations

We study here instability problems of standing waves for the nonlinear Klein–Gordon equations and solitary waves for the generalized Boussinesq equations. It is shown that those special wave solutions may be strongly unstable by blowup in finite time, depending on the range of the wave's frequency or the wave's speed of propagation and on the nonlinearity.     

Comparative kinetics of phospholipase A2 action on liposomes and monolayers of phosphatidylcholine spread at the air-water interface

A detailed kinetic model describing the surface transformation of spread liposomes along with their enzymatic hydrolysis was developed. The model was applied to the hydrolysis of the long-chain phosphatidylcholine generating reaction products which remain at the interface and to medium-chain substrates from which the products desorb rapidly into the bulk phase. The overall kinetic constants of the hydrolysis in liposomal systems were compared with those obtained with monolayers under barostatic conditions. The values of the interfacial Michaelis-Menten constant were estimated.     

On the geometries of the rational unfoldings of X k

With a view to applications to self-regulating dynamical processes in biology, we determine the geometric structure of what we call isotangent curves, i.e. curves parametrized by the slopes of their points. They come up naturally as bifurcation curves of rational unfoldings of X ^k, and we classify them according to degree and number of cusps. They, as well as their isotangent involute curves, turn up in simulations of these processes.

The formula for the product of polynomials of the Boas-Buck type is obtained.     

A strange pigeon-hole principle

Using Ramsey theory, we establish the following pigeon-hole type principle: From a large number of random variables (functions, vectors, etc.) one can always select two, X and Y, such that P(X < Y) 1/2. We apply the principle for a poset problem.     

On well-ordered mono-unary algebras

Given a linearly ordered set (A, _R ) and an R-monotone function f: AA, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on A, f, _R , involving generating sets and forbidden subalgebras, for _R to be a well-ordering.Partially supported by Hungarian National Foundation for Scientific Research Grant nr. 1813.     

Phase transitions and positive definite couplings

The method of infrared bounds is extended to a large class of nearest neighbour interactions in classical spin systems. Temperature controlled bounds on fluctuations follow whenever the coupling function is a positive definite kernel. Existence of phase transitions is demonstrated for the RP ^Nmodel for d3.     

On a question of H. Kraljević

In this paper, assuming a certain set-theoretic hypothesis, a positive answer is given to a question of H. Kraljevi, namely it is shown that there exists a Lebesgue measurable subsetA of the real line such that the set {c R: A + cA contains an interval} is nonmeasurable. Here the setA + cA = {a + ca: a, a A}. Two other results about sets of the formA + cA are presented.
