The Modeling of Velocity Enhancement in Polymer Flooding

In single-phase polymer flooding experiments it has repeatedly been observed that the average velocity of the polymer molecules is higher than the average velocity of the water molecules. This effect is incorporated in many conventional Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) simulators by the introduction of a constant velocity enhancement factor. In this paper we show that, in absence of dispersion, a constant enhancement factor in the mathematical model for two-phase polymer flow (Buckley--Leverett displacement) leads to ill-posedness of the model equations. We propose a saturation dependent enhancement factor, derived from a model based on percolation concepts, for which this problem does not occur.

A complete boundary integral formulation for compressible Navier–Stokes equations

A complete boundary integral formulation for compressible Navier–Stokes equations with time discretization by operator splitting is developed using the fundamental solutions of the Helmholtz operator equation with different order. The numerical results for wall pressure and wall skin friction of two‐dimensional compressible laminar viscous flow around airfoils are in good agreement with field numerical methods. CALCULUS OF VARIATIONS WITH DIRICHLET BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR PERTURBED SECOND-ORDER DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS ON A HALF-LINE

Dirichlet boundary value problems for perturbed second-order differential equations on a half line are investigated in this paper. The methods mainly depend on the calculus of variations to the classical functionals. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of the solutions.     

Total energy decay for the wave equation in exterior domains with a dissipation near infinity

We show that the energy of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the wave equation in exterior domains with a dissipation which is localized only near infinity tends to zero as the time goes to infinity. We do not make any geometrical condition like star-shapedness on the boundary.     

The Hamiltonian Canonical Form for Euler-Lagrange Equations

Based on the theory of calculus of variation, some suffcient conditions are given for some Euler-Lagrangcequations to be equivalently represented by finite or even infinite many Hamiltonian canonical equations. Meanwhile,some further applications for equations such as the KdV equation, MKdV equation, the general linear Euler Lagrangeequation and the cylindric shell equations are given.     

Numerical analysis of the Toda lattice equations

Numerical solutions to three systems of integrable evolutionary equations from the Toda lattice hierarchy are analyzed. These are the classical Toda lattice, the second local dispersive flow, and the second extended dispersive flow. Special attention is given to the properties of soliton solutions. For the equations of the second local flow, two types of solitons interacting in a special manner are found. Solutions corresponding to various initial data are qualitatively outlined.

On the solution of Maxwell's equations in polygonal domains

This paper is concerned with the structure of the singular and regular parts of the solution of time‐harmonic Maxwell's equations in polygonal plane domains and their effective numerical treatment. The asymptotic behaviour of the solution near corner points of the domain is studied by means of discrete Fourier transformation and it is proved that the solution of the boundary value problem does not belong locally to H² when the boundary of the domain has non‐acute angles. A splitting of the solution into a regular part belonging to the space H², and an explicitly described singular part is presented. For the numerical treatment of the boundary value problem, we propose a finite element discretization which combines local mesh grading and the singular field methods and derive a priori error estimates that show optimal convergence as known for the classical finite element method for problems with regular solutions.
