Chase’s lemma and its context

Chase’s lemma provides a powerful tool for translating properties of (co)products in abelian categories into chain conditions. This note discusses the context in which the lemma is used, making explicit what is often neglected in the literature because of its technical nature.     

Muscle oxygenation measurement in humans by noninvasive optical spectroscopy and Locally Weighted Regression

We have developed a method to make real-time, continuous, noninvasive measurements of muscle oxygenation (Mox) from the surface of the skin. A key development was measurement in both the visible and near infrared (NIR) regions. Measurement of both oxygenated and deoxygenated myoglobin and hemoglobin resulted in a more accurate measurement of Mox than could be achieved with measurement of only the deoxygenated components, as in traditional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Using the second derivative with respect to wavelength reduced the effects of scattering on the spectra and also made oxygenated and deoxygenated forms more distinguishable from each other. Selecting spectral bands where oxygenated and deoxygenated forms absorb filtered out noise and spectral features unrelated to Mox. NIR and visible bands were scaled relative to each other in order to correct for errors introduced by normalization. Multivariate Curve Resolution (MCR) was used to estimate Mox from spectra within each data set collected from healthy subjects. A Locally Weighted Regression (LWR) model was built from calibration set spectra and associated Mox values from 20 subjects using 2562 spectra. LWR and Partial Least Squares (PLS) allow accurate measurement of Mox despite variations in skin pigment or fat layer thickness in different subjects. The method estimated Mox in five healthy subjects with an RMSE of 5.4%.     

Wreath Products and Universal Equivalence

We consider the question of preservation of universal equivalence for the cartesian and direct wreath products of lattice-ordered groups and groups. We prove that the basic rank is infinite of the quasivariety of torsion-free nilpotent groups of nilpotence length c (c2)

The paper develops sufficient conditions for controllability and necessary conditions in different forms of the maximum principle for extremal solutions of discrete inclusions. The objective function is assumed to be locally lipschitzian only     

Homological Invariants and Quasi-Isometry

Building upon work of Y. Shalom we give a homological-algebra flavored definition of an induction map in group homology associated to a topological coupling. As an application we obtain that the cohomological dimension cd_R over a commutative ring R satisfies the inequality if Λ embeds uniformly into Γ and holds. Another consequence of our results is that the Hirsch ranks of quasi-isometric solvable groups coincide. Further, it is shown that the real cohomology rings of quasi-isometric nilpotent groups are isomorphic as graded rings. On the analytic side, we apply the induction technique to Novikov-Shubin invariants of amenable groups, which can be seen as homological invariants, and show their invariance under quasi-isometry. On Groups with a CC(n)-Subgroup

A subgroup H of G is a CC(n)-subgroup of G if |G: H| >n and |C_G(x): C_H(x)| ≤n for each element x ∈ H ? {1}. In this article, we study the finite p-groups with a nontrivial CC(p)-subgroup, and the locally nilpotent groups with a nontrivial CC(n)-subgroup.

Remark on cone semistrictly preinvex functions

In this paper, we consider the cone semistrictly preinvex function introduced by Peng and Zhu (J Inequal Appl 93532:1–14, 2006). The relationship between cone semistrictly preinvex functions and cone preinvex functions is investigated. A property of the cone semistrictly preinvex function is obtained.
