Electrostatic interactions in peptides. Polarisation effects due to an α-helix

A quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical study of a dodecapeptide made of 11 alanine and one asparagine residues in a helical conformation is carried out by means of the local self-consistent field/molecular mechanical and integrated molecular orbital and molecular mechanics computational schemes. The electronic properties of the asparagine side chain are analysed to extract the influence of electrostatic and induction interaction. One finds that induction may play an important role in the energetic and structural features of the systems modelled with mixed methods. The importance of performing quantum computations which explicitly take account of the electrostatic interactions is pointed out.Contribution to the Jacopo Tomasi Honorary Issue     

Multiplicity Free Actions of Quantum Groups and Generalized Howe Duality

Noncommutative associative algebras are constructed which have the structure of module algebras over tensor products of pairs of quantized universal enveloping algebras. These module algebras decompose into multiplicity free direct sums of irreducible modules, yielding quantum analogues of generalized Howe dualities.     

Idempotents of Clifford Algebras

A classification of idempotents of Clifford algebras C ^p,q is presented. It is shown that using isomorphisms between Clifford algebras C ^p,q and appropriate matrix rings, it is possible to classify idempotents in any Clifford algebra into continuous families. These families include primitive idempotents used to generate minimal one-sided ideals in Clifford algebras. Some low-dimensional examples are discussed.

On the algebraicK-theory of twisted flag varieties

The algebraicK-groups of projective homogeneous varieties are computed. The answer is given in terms ofK-groups of a semisimple algebra canonically associated with the variety. Our results generalize a result of Quillen and a result of Swan, whereK-groups of Severi-Brauer varieties and of smooth projective quadratic hypersurfaces were computed.

On compact multipliers of topological algebras

It is shown that if the maximal ideal space (A) of a semisimple commutative complete metrizable locally convex algebra contains no isolated points, then every compact multiplies is trivial. In particular, compact multipliers on semisimple commutative Fréchet algebras whose maximal ideal space has no isolated points are identically zero.     

On the finiteness of Bass numbers of local cohomology modules

In this note we show that, if is an ideal of dimension 1 of an analytically irreducible local ring, then the Bass numbers of local cohomology modules with support in are finite.

     

Faux-boolean algebras and classical models

A certain substructure of the lattice of projections on a Hilbert space is defined, and it is shown under what conditions such a structure can be said to have a classical model (in a sense made precise). The results have implications for the interpretation of quantum mechanics.     

Total extensions of effect algebras

It is shown that if the natural order on a total extension of an effect algebra coincides with the order on, then is unique. The structure of is called a QI-algebra. It is shown that a QI-algebra is less general than a QMV-algebra, but that a QI-algebra is equivalent to a quasi-linear QMV-algebra. Some examples are given and the properties of these structures are studied.
