Duality in algebra and topology

We apply ideas from commutative algebra, and Morita theory to algebraic topology using ring spectra. This allows us to prove new duality results in algebra and topology, and to view (1) Poincaré duality for manifolds, (2) Gorenstein duality for commutative rings, (3) Benson–Carlson duality for cohomology rings of finite groups, (4) Poincaré duality for groups and (5) Gross–Hopkins duality in chromatic stable homotopy theory as examples of a single phenomenon.     

Heat capacity calorimetry

Experimental heat capacity measurements of α-ZrW₂O₈, and zeolitic polymorphs of SiO₂, BEA and MFI, have been made from 0.6 to 400 K. Measurements on β-ZrMo₂O₈ have been made from 8 to 400 K. Analysis of the results yields evidence for very low frequency modes in all four materials. These modes are responsible for negative thermal expansion behavior in α-ZrW₂O₈ and β-ZrMo₂O₈. Negative thermal expansion has been observed in some pure SiO₂ zeolites, but no studies have been made to look for it in BEA and MFI. The appearance of low frequency modes in these two zeolites suggests that temperature dependent structural investigations would be worthwhile. These modes are lower in energy than the Boson peak in vitreous silica. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Lattice-Boltzmann Models for heat transfer

A multispeed heat transfer lattice Boltzmann model is presented. The model possesses the perfect gas state equation with arbitrary special heat ratio. The macroscopic conservation equations are derived by the Chapman-Enskog method. The one dimensional simulation for the sinusoidal energy distributions are compared with the theoretical results, showing good agreement. The theoretical conductivity in the energy equation is in accordance with the simulations.

Efficient robust estimation of parameter in the random censorship model

For an open set Θ of ^k, let \s{P_θ: θ Θ\s} be a parametric family of probabilities modeling the distribution of i.i.d. random variables X₁,…, X_n. Suppose X_i's are subject to right censoring and one is only able to observe the pairs (min(X_i, Y_i), [X_i Y_i]), i = 1,…, n, where [A] denotes the indicator function of the event A, Y₁,…, Y_n are independent of X₁,…, X_n and i.i.d. with unknown distribution Q₀. This paper investigates estimation of the value θ that gives a fitted member of the parametric family when the distributions of X₁ and Y₁ are subject to contamination. The constructed estimators are adaptive under the semi-parametric model and robust against small contaminations: they achieve a lower bound for the local asymptotic minimax risk over Hellinger neighborhoods, in the Hájel—Le Cam sense. The work relies on Beran (1981). The construction employs some results on product-limit estimators.

微小尺度下自然对流换热特性实验研究

采用直接电加热法对平均为101 μm、403μm及801μm的铜丝进行加热,使用高精度电阻仪测量电加热前及电加热后的铜丝的电阻值,根据温度与金属电阻之间的关系能够相当精确的测量整个铜丝电加热后的平均温度值。电加热时的电压及电流也同时被测量。实验结果表明,在自然对流条件下,实验得到的努谢尔特数与经典的准则关联式得到的努谢尔特数随着外径的减小,其偏差越来越大,最大偏差超过50％。
