Reaction studies of carbon clusters

Reaction studies of carbon clustersC _n in the rangen=8–37, produced by laser vaporisation in a supersonic nozzle, have been investigated using time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Clear differences in reaction products formed on hydrogenation are detected which show that even and odd clusters behave quite differently and furthermore thatat least two different types of even cluster appear to exist. The reactivity patterns for clusters C _n withn=16, 18 and 22 are in a different class from those withn=20, 24, 26 ..., a behaviour consistent with the existence of closed cage fullerene structures for even clusters with 20 or more carbon atoms (other thann=22).     

A new biomaterial,hen egg shell membrane,to eliminate heavy metal ion from their dilute waste solution

The egg shell membrane (ESM) is an intricate lattice network of stable and water-insoluble fibers with high surface area. ESM accumulates and eliminates various heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solution with high affinity and in short contact time, depending on pH and characteristics of the individual ion. Under certain conditions, the level of precious ions, Au, Pt, and Pd accumulation approaches 55, 25, and 22% of dry wt of ESM, respectively. Also uranium uptake 30% of that of ESM. Experiments suggested that ESM is promising to use for the purpose of removal/recovery of metals and water pollution control.

Weighted bounds for the carleson maximal operator inR n

The Carleson maximal operator is shown to be bounded inL ^p (w) for certain values ofp and certain radial weightsw when acting on products of radial functions and homogeneous harmonic polynomials. Partially supported by DGICYT (MEC Spain). PB 92/187.     

Dynamic complexity of optimal paths and discount factors for strongly concave problems

We study the relationship between the dynamical complexity of optimal paths and the discount factor in general infinite-horizon discrete-time concave problems. Given a dynamic systemx _t+1=h(x _t ), defined on the state space, we find two discount factors 0 < ^{* **} < 1 having the following properties. For any fixed discount factor 0 < < ^*, the dynamic system is the solution to some concave problem. For any discount factor ^** < < 1, the dynamic system is not the solution to any strongly concave problem. We prove that the upper bound ^** is a decreasing function of the topological entropy of the dynamic system. Partial order complementation graphs

Two partial ordersP andQ on a setX arecomplementary (written asPQ) if they share no ordered pairs (except for loops) but the transitive closure of the union is all possible ordered pairs. For each positive integern we form a graph Pos _n consisting of all nonempty partial orders on {1, ,n} with edges denoting complementation. We investigate here properties of the graphs Pos _n . In particular, we show:

Lehmer pairs of zeros,the de Bruijn-Newman constant Λ, and the Riemann Hypothesis

We give here a rigorous formulation for a pair of consecutive simple positive zeros of the functionH ₀ (which is closely related to the Riemann -function) to be a Lehmer pair of zeros ofH ₀. With this formulation, we establish that each such pair of zeros gives a lower bound for the de Bruijn-Newman constant (where the Riemann Hypothesis is equivalent to the assertion that 0). We also numerically obtain the following new lower bound for :

Beta decay of very neutron-rich110Mo studied at the new IGISOL facility

The decay of the new activity¹¹⁰Mo (t_1/2=0.30(4).s) has been observed at the new IGISOL separator. Multiscaled singles,--t and -y-t coincidences were recorded. The decay scheme suggests I=2⁺ for the ground state of the daughter nucleus¹¹⁰Tc. Three 1⁺ levels are fed with logft values below 5, indicating no drastic change among Mo and Ru decays at the middle of the neutron shell. This experiment confirms the expectation that the new IGISOL facility will allow the identification of one or two new more neutron-rich isotopes per element in this region.Supported by the Academy of Finland.     

Comparison of the elastic and inelastic scatterings between152Sm+12C and148 Nd+16O

Angular distributions of elastic and inelastic scattering have been measured for¹⁵²Sm+¹²C at 63.2 MeV and¹⁴⁸Nd+¹⁶O at 90.9 MeV. An evident interference pattern in the inelastic scattering has been observed for the first time in a strong Coulomb coupling system.We are indebted to Dr. S.
