An Elementary Proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry (Dedicated to Alfred Frölicher)

The following version of the fundamental theorem is proved: Let V, W be vector spaces and g: P(V)\E P(W) a morphism between the associated projective spaces. If the image of g is not contained in a line, then there exists a semilinear map f: V W which induces g. The difficulty lies in the fact that the homomorphism of division rings associated to the map f can be nonsurjective. As an application, a short proof of Wigner's theorem is also proposed.

Computation of generalized real radicals of polynomial ideals

For an ordered field (K,T) and an idealI of the polynomial ring , the construction of the generalized real radical ofI is investigated. When (K,T) satisfies some computational requirements, a method of computing is presented. Laguerre geometry of surfaces with plane lines of curvature

We study surfaces with plane lines of curvature in the framework of Laguerre geometry and provide explicit representation formulae for these surfaces in terms of a potential function. As an application, we explicitly integrate allL- minimal surfaces with plane curvature lines. Partially supported by MURST 40.     

On the Infinitesimal Rigidity of Homogeneous Varieties

Let XP be a variety (respectively an open subset of an analytic submanifold) and let xX be a point where all integer valued differential invariants are locally constant. We show that if the projective second fundamental form of X at x is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Segre P× P, n,m2, a Grassmaniann G(2,n+2), n4, or the Cayley plane OP², then X is the corresponding homogeneous variety (resp. an open subset of the corresponding homogeneous variety). The case of the Segre P²×P² had been conjectured by Griffiths and Harris in [GH]. If the projective second fundamental form of X at x is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Veronese v₂(P) and the Fubini cubic form of X at x is zero, then X=v₂ (P) (resp. an open subset of v₂(P)). All these results are valid in the real or complex analytic categories and locally in the C category if one assumes the hypotheses hold in a neighborhood of any point x. As a byproduct, we show that the systems of quadrics I₂(P P) S²C, I₂(P¹× P) S²C and I₂(S₅) S²C¹⁶ are stable in the sense that if A S^* is an analytic family such that for t0,AA, then A₀A. We also make some observations related to the Fulton–:Hansen connectedness theorem.     

On the Classification of Flag-Transitive c.c*- Geometries

Let ( G) be a flag-transitive c.c*-geometry whose point-stabilizer is not an affine group. We list all known examples and show that, if (, G) is a minimal unknown example, then G is an almost simple group and the commutator subgroup G is a simple group of Lie type.     

On the Size of a Cap in PG(n,q) with q Even and n ≥ 3

Let m2(n,q), m2(n,q) be, respectively, the maximum value, the second largest value of k for which there exists a complete k-cap in PG(n,q). In this paper, the known upper bound on m2(3,q), q even, q 8, is improved. This new upper bound on m2(3,q) is then used to improve the upper bounds on m2(n,q), q even, q 8 and n 4.     

HAMILTONIAN SYSTEM AND SIMPLETIC GEOMETRY IN MECHANICS OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS (Ⅱ)——PLANE STRESS PROBLEM

Fundamental theory presented in Part (I)^[8] is used to analyze anisotropic plane stress problems. First we construct the generalized variational principle to enter Hamiltonian system and get Hamiltonian differential operator matrix; then we solve eigen problem; finally, we present the process of obtaining analytical solutions and semi-analytical solutions for anisotropic plane stress problems on rectangular area.     

Eight and seven point degenerations of Miquel's Theorem in Laguerre planes

For M?bius planes Schaeffer [9] has proved that all seven point degenerations of Miquel's Theorem characterize miquelian M?bius planes. For Laguerre planes we have several degenerations of Miquel's Theorem with eight and seven points. We prove that all except one of these degenerations characterize miquelian Laguerre planes. The remaining degeneration characterizes elation Laguerre planes. Received 14 September 2001; revised 1 September 2002.
