On linear and nonlinear Rossby waves in an ocean

This paper deals with recent developments of linear and nonlinear Rossby waves in an ocean. Included are also linear Poincaré, Rossby, and Kelvin waves in an ocean. The dispersion diagrams for Poincaré, Kelvin and Rossby waves are presented. Special attention is given to the nonlinear Rossby waves on a β-plane ocean. Based on the perturbation analysis, it is shown that the nonlinear evolution equation for the wave amplitude satisfies a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solution of this equation represents solitary waves in a dispersive medium. In other words, the envelope of the amplitude of the waves has a soliton structure and these envelope solitons propagate with the group velocity of the Rossby waves. Finally, a nonlinear analytical model is presented for long Rossby waves in a meridional channel with weak shear. A new nonlinear wave equation for the amplitude of large Rossby waves is derived in a region where fluid flows over the recirculation core. It is shown that the governing amplitude equations for the inner and outer zones are both KdV type, where weak nonlinearity is balanced by weak dispersion. In the inner zone, the nonlinear amplitude equation has a new term proportional to the 3/2 power of the difference between the wave amplitude and the critical amplitude, and this term occurs to account for a nonlinearity due to the flow over the vortex core. The solution of the amplitude equations with the linear shear flow represents the solitary waves. The present study deals with the lowest mode (n=1) analysis. An extension of the higher modes (n?2) of this work will be made in a subsequent paper.     

General synchronization dynamics of coupled Van der Pol–Duffing oscillators

This paper considers the general synchronization dynamics of coupled Van der Pol–Duffing oscillators. The linear and nonlinear stability analysis on the synchronization process is derived through the Whittaker method and the Floquet theory in addition to the multiple time scales method. A stability map displaying different dynamical states of the system is performed. Numerical simulation is carried out to support and to complement the accuracy of the analytical treatment.

All parabolic subgroups and Borel subgroups of PΩ(2m 1, F) over a linear-able field F of characteristic 0 are shown to be complete groups, provided m > 3.     

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear polarization applied to evaluation of porosity of phosphate conversion coatings on electrogalvanized steels

In this work, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear polarization are used in determining porosity of zinc phosphates, and of nickel and manganese modified zinc phosphates on electrogalvanized steel. The porosity of the phosphate layers ranges from 0.1% for the manganese-modified hopeite to 8% for hopeite, using the linear polarization and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The porosity values measured using the two techniques were in agreement. All impedance spectra of coated samples showed two steps, with two capacitive arcs and an inductive looping.     

Discrete approximation of integral operators

A method to approximate the eigenvalues of linear operators depending on an unknown distribution is introduced and applied to weighted sums of squared normally distributed random variables. This area of application includes the approximation of the asymptotic null distribution of certain degenerated U- and V-statistics.

     

Fractional-Linear Transformations of Operator Balls; Applications to Dynamical Systems

The operator sets, which are the subject of this paper, have been studied in many papers where, under different restrictions on the generating operators, convexity, compactness in the weak operator topology, and nonemptiness were proved for sets of different classes under study. Then the results obtained were used in these papers to solve several applied problems. Namely, they played the key role in establishing the dichotomy of nonautonomous dynamical systems, with either continuous or discrete time. In the present paper, we generalize and sharpen the already known criteria and obtain several new criteria for convexity, compactness, and nonemptiness of several special operator sets. Then, using the assertions obtained, we construct examples of sets of the form under study which are nonconvex, noncompact in the weak operator topology, as well as empty, and are generated by ＂smooth＂ operators of a special class. The existence problem for such sets remained open until the authors of this paper announced some of its results.     

An experiment with arithmetic precision in linear algebra computations

Several techniques for experimental determination of floating point precision in practical computations are examined, and applied to linear algebra algorithms. These techniques are simple enough to be directly applicable to existing production codes, requiring a very limited amount of software on many machines, and yet they yield interesting information on the numerical precision of a computation. Our choice of linear algebra algorithms includes a direct solver (namely the MA32 program from the Harwell Library) and several variants of preconditioned conjugate gradients (the methods DIAG, INV, MINV and POL of Reference 1). The results may be of interest as method selection criteria, and thus complement Mflop performance data available from several sources.

Elliptic integral solutions of spatial elastica of a thin straight rod bent under concentrated terminal forces

In this article, we solve in closed form a system of nonlinear differential equations modelling the elastica in space of a thin, flexible, straight rod, loaded by a constant thrust at its free end. Common linearizations of strength of materials are of course not applicable any way, because we analyze great deformations, even if not so large to go off the linear elasticity range. By passing to cylindrical coordinates ρ, θ, z, we earn a more tractable differential system evaluating ρ as elliptic function of polar anomaly θ and also providing z through elliptic integrals of I and III kind. Deformed rod’s centerline is then completely described under both tensile or compressive load. Finally, the planar case comes out as a degeneracy, where the Bernoulli lemniscatic integral appears.
