The long‐time behaviour of the thermoconvective flow in a porous medium

For the Boussinesq approximation of the equations of coupled heat and fluid flow in a porous medium we show that the corresponding system of partial differential equations possesses a global attractor. We give lower and upper bounds of the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor depending on a physical parameter of the system, namely the Rayleigh number of the flow. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical findings and raise new questions on the structure of the solutions of the system. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Existence and uniform decay for Euler–Bernoulli beam equation with memory term

In this article we prove the existence of the solution to the mixed problem for Euler–Bernoulli beam equation with memory term. The existence is proved by means of the Faedo–Galerkin method and the exponential decay is obtained by making use of the multiplier technique combined with integral inequalities due to Komornik. Uniformity in Computable Structure Theory

We investigate the effects of adding uniformity requirements to concepts in computable structure theory such as computable categoricity (of a structure) and intrinsic computability (of a relation on a computable structure). We consider and compare two different notions of uniformity, previously studied by Kudinov and by Ventsov. We discuss some of their results and establish new ones, while also exploring the connections with the relative computable structure theory of Ash, Knight, Manasse, and Slaman and Chisholm and with previous work of Ash, Knight, and Slaman on uniformity in a general computable structure-theoretical setting.     

Stability Conditions of the MMAP [ K ]/ G [ K ]/1/ LCFS Preemptive Repeat Queue

In this paper, we study the stability conditions of the MMAP[K]/G[K]/1/LCFS preemptive repeat queue. We introduce an embedded Markov chain of matrix M/G/1 type with a tree structure and identify conditions for the Markov chain to be ergodic. First, we present three conventional methods for the stability problem of the queueing system of interest. These methods are either computationally demanding or do not provide accurate information for system stability. Then we introduce a novel approach that develops two linear programs whose solutions provide sufficient conditions for stability or instability of the queueing system. The new approach is numerically efficient. The advantages and disadvantages of the methods introduced in this paper are analyzed both theoretically and numerically.

The linear polarization constant of R n

Summary He present work deals with estimations of the n-th linear polarization constant c(H)_n of an n-dimensional real Hilbert space H. We provide some new lower bounds on the value of sup_║y║=1 │1,y> ... n,y>│, where x₁, ... ,x_n are unit vectors in H. In particular, the results improve an earlier estimate of Marcus. However, the intriguing conjecture c(H) _n= n^n/2 remains open.     

Investigation and optimization of the covering power and coloristic properties of paint coatings of complex composition

A method for finding the optimum sizes of pigment particles, their volume concentration, and the paint coating thickness that provide the covering power and the required coloristic characteristics of reflected light for the minimum flow rate of pigments is based on using a four-flow approximation of the solution to the equation of radiation transfer in dispersion media and is extended to coatings of complex composition. The capabilities of the method are demonstrated by examples of coatings of mixtures of hematite and rutile particles in a binder with n=1.5 for variations of the modal size and the half-width of the size distribution of the pigment particles. RSOS Models and Jantzen–Seitz Representations of Hecke Algebras at Roots of Unity

A special family of partitions occurs in two apparently unrelated contexts: the evaluation of one-dimensional configuration sums of certain RSOS models, and the modular representation theory of symmetric groups or their Hecke algebras H_m. We provide an explanation of this coincidence by showing how the irreducible H_m-modules which remain irreducible under restriction to H_{m_1} (Jantzen–Seitz modules) can be determined from the decomposition of a tensor product of representations sl_n.
