Internal dynamics of flexible molecules: Cyclohexane

Summary The international motions of a single cyclohexane molecule are studied by molecular dynamics calculations. Classical trajectories are calculated by integrating Newton's equation of motion. The potential functions used are essentially the same as in Allinger's MM2 program which is widely applied for calculations on conformational energies of organic molecules.Geometries and relative energies are reported for all stable low energy conformers and some transition states of cyclohexane. Vibrational frequencies of classical oscillations of individual bonds — computed for ethane as reference system — are close to the experimental values.Two trajectories of the molecular dynamics of cyclohexane were simulated. In the first we were able to follow the process of ring inversion: chair twisted forms inverted chair. The reaction path is analysed in detail and compared with static approaches. The second trajectory shows the correlated reorientation of the possible twisted forms alone. This process is known as pseudorotation.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Karl Schlögl     

Alternative paths in the ring opening of oxadiaziridine: The diimide N-oxide versus the oxodiimide rearrangement

The ring opening of the oxadiaziridine by cleavage of the N-N bond has been theoretically investigated by SCF calculations improved with limited CI. The possible competition of this reaction with the better known ones (N-O bond cleavage, inversion of the N atom) is discussed. The chemical implications of the formation of a new type of 1,3-dipole are examined.

Synthesis and conformational analysis of naphth[1′,2′:5,6][1,3]oxazino[3,2-c][1,3]benzoxazine and naphth[1′,2′:5,6][1,3]oxazino[3,4-c][1,3]benzoxazine derivatives

A new functional group, the hydroxy group, was inserted into a Betti base by reaction with salicylaldehyde, and the naphthoxazine derivatives thus obtained were converted by ring-closure reactions with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde or phosgene to the corresponding naphth[1′2′:5,6][1,3]oxazino[3,2-c][1,3]benzoxazine derivatives. Further, the conformational analysis of these polycyclic compounds by NMR spectroscopy and an accompanying molecular modelling are reported; especially, both quantitative anisotropic ring current effects of the aromatic moieties in these compounds and steric substituent effects were employed to determine the stereochemistry of the naphthoxazinobenzoxazine derivatives.

An unusual twist conformation of 2-O-methyl-1,3,4,5-tetrakis-O-tert-butyldiphenylsilyl-myo-inositol

The ring conformation of 2-O-methyl-1,3,4,5-tetrakis-O-tert-butyldiphenylsilyl-myo-inositol was in a twist form both in solid state and in solution. This is the first observation of a stable twist conformer induced by the introduction of bulky silyl protecting groups.

A concise synthesis of β-lactam-sulfonamide hybrids

Using ring closing metathesis (RCM) as the key operation, a rapid access to β-lactams fused to a sultam moiety of variable ring size was developed from low cost, commercially available starting materials. An efficient RCM of 4-vinyl-azetidin-2-ones to give 1-aza-bicyclo[4.2.0]oct-4-en-8-ones is also reported.     

Solvent-free direct regioselective ring opening of epoxides with imidazoles

The reaction of different epoxides with commercially available imidazole at 60 °C leads to the formation of the corresponding 1-(β-hydroxyalkyl)imidazoles in a regioselective manner. When the reaction is applied to a chiral epoxide [(R)-styrene oxide], the expected chiral alcohol is isolated with the same enantiomeric excess. The use of benzimidazole as the heterocyclic component in the same process also allows the simple preparation of the corresponding 1-(β-hydroxyalkyl)benzimidazoles.

In aqueous bicarbonate its 3-oxogroup is selectively reduced by sodium tetrahydroborate giving the alcohol4, which readily undergoes cyclization in refluxing dioxane leading to the title pyrone7. Under identical conditions3 produces the pyrone6 with the pyrone carboxylic acid5 as intermediate.
