Regularity of Harmonic Functions in Cheeger-Type Sobolev Spaces

We give a geometric approach to the study of the regularity of harmonic functions in Cheeger-type Sobolev spaces, and prove the Hölder continuity of such functions. In the proof, we give a definition of an upper curvature bound of the unit sphere of a Banach space, which seems to be of independent interest.     

Solving a class of multiplicative programming problems via c-programming

In this note we show that many classes of global optimization problems can be treated most satisfactorily by classical optimization theory and conventional algorithms. We focus on the class of problems involving the minimization of the product of several convex functions on a convex set which was studied recently by Kunoet al. [3]. It is shown that these problems are typical composite concave programming problems and thus can be handled elegantly by c-programming [4]–[8] and its techniques.     

Infinite propagation speed of the Camassa-Holm equation

We use the inverse scattering transform to show that a solution of the Camassa-Holm equation is identically zero whenever it vanishes on two horizontal half-lines in the x-t space. In particular, a solution that has compact support at two different times vanishes everywhere, proving that the Camassa-Holm equation has infinite propagation speed.

Hyers–Ulam stability of linear differential operator with constant coefficients

Let P(z) be a polynomial of degree n with complex coefficients and consider the n–th order linear differential operator P(D). The regularizing properties of anisotropic radial basis functions

In the present work we consider the problem of interpolating scattered data using radial basis functions (RBF). In general, it is well known that this leads to a discrete linear inverse problem that needs to be regularized in order to provide a meaningful solution. The work focuses on a metric-regularization approach, based on a new class of RBF, called anisotropic RBF. The work provides theoretical justifications for the regularization approach and it considers a suitable proposal for the metric, supporting it by numerical examples.     

Sufficient optimality conditions and duality in vector optimization with invex-convexlike functions

We prove the Kuhn-Tucker sufficient optimality condition, the Wolfe duality, and a modified Mond-Weir duality for vector optimization problems involving various types of invex-convexlike functions. The class of such functins contains many known generalized convex functions. As applications, we demonstrate that, under invex-convexlikeness assumptions, the Pontryagin maximum principle is a sufficient optimality condition for cooperative differential games. The Wolfe duality is established for these games.The author is indebted to the referees and Professor W. Generalized Christoffel functions and error of positive quadrature

The author gives some upper and lower bounds for the generalized Christoffel functions related to a Ditzian-Totik generalized weight. A numerically stable algorithm for two server queue models

In this paper, we consider a queueing system in which there are two exponential servers, each having his own queue, and arriving customers will join the shorter queue. Based on the results given in Flatto and McKean, we rewrite the formula for the probability that there are exactlyk customers in each queue, wherek = 0, 1,…. This enables us to present an algorithm for computing these probabilities and then to find the joint distribution of the queue lengths in the system. A program and numerical examples are given.     

Comparisons of pharynx, source, formant, and pressure characteristics in operatic and musical theatre singing

Belting, a vocal technique typically cultivated in musical theatre singing, differs timbrally from operatic singing in many interesting respects. The underlying phonatory differences have not been previously investigated in detail. Yet, belting is frequently associated with disturbances of voice function. Articulatory and phonatory characteristics are investigated in a female subject who is a professional singer (co-author JL) trained in both the operatic and belting styles and in an intermediate vocal technique (“mixed”). This article presents data obtained from this subject by video-fiberoptic observation of the pharynx, inverse filtering of airflow, and measurement of subglottal pressure. The results reveal that belting was characterized by very high subglottal pressures and sound levels, and apparently also by a comparatively high degree of glottal adduction. Comparisons with other investigations of related aspects of belting and operatic singing support the assumption that the data obtained from our subject are representative for these vocal techniques.
