Weierstrass Points and Regular Maps

It was shown by G. A. Jones and the first author in [8] that underlying any map on a compact orientable surface S there is a natural complex structure making S into a Riemann surface. In this paper we consider regular maps and enquire about the Weierstrass points on the underlying Riemann surface. We are particularly interested to know when these are geometric, i.e. whether they lie at vertices, face-centres or edge-centres of the map.

研究了条件泛函及其导数的非参数估计,对随机与固定设计的条件泛函,分别利用核估计和非参数加权估计,在核函数及权函数满足一定条件下,证明了估计一致强收敛于待估函数的速度可达到最优。从而进一步推广和发展了Hrdle,etal.(1988)、Severini,etal.(1992)的许多结果。     

Patterned uniformly orientated silicon nanocrystallite films and efficient field emission characteristics

Patterned uniformly (100)-orientated silicon nanocrystallite (SiNC) films were fabricated based on hydrogen ion implantation technique and typical electrochemical anodic etching method. The surface morphology and microstructure characteristics of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy. The efficient field emission with low turn-on field of about 3.2 V/μm at current density of 0.1 μA/cm² was obtained. The emission current density from the SiNC films reached 1 mA/cm² under a bias field of about 11 V/μm. The experimental results demonstrate that the SiNC films have great potential applications for flat panel displays.     

The effect of Fe and Ru substitution on the superconductivity in MgCNi3

We report the effects of partial substitutions of the VIIIa elements: Fe (3d) and Ru (4d) in the intermetallic perovskite superconductor MgCNi₃. In both the MgCNi_3−xRu_x and MgCNi_3−xFe_x systems, the superconducting critical temperature (T_C) decreases monotonically as x is increased. T_C decreases more slowly in the case of Ru, suggesting that the 3d electrons in Fe are magnetically pair breaking. This is supported by the normal state magnetic susceptibility measurements (χ), which shows that χ increases with Fe and decreases with Ru doping. No ferromagnetism is observed in either system.     

Polaron effects on third-harmonic generation in cylindrical quantum-well wires

Polaron effects on third-harmonic generation (THG) in cylindrical quantum wires with a finite confining potential are investigated. The THG coefficient is obtained by using the compact-density-matrix approach and an iterative method, and the numerical results are presented for GaAs/AlAs cylindrical quantum wires. The results show that the THG coefficient is greatly enhanced and the peak shift to the aspect of high energy when considering the influence of electron-phonon interaction.     

Water-induced stabilization of ZnS nanoparticles

Surface states become important in particles with reduced size as the surface to volume ratio increases. Here we provide direct evidence of water-induced structure buildup and stabilization of nanocrystalline ZnS. The ZnS nanoparticles, prepared employing a non-equilibrium route, provide an ideal platform to investigate microscopic details of water induced structural transformation and thus demonstrate the role of S-H interactions in the time-evolution of crystalline behaviour in these particles. The colossal changes observed make these materials ideal for water sensing.     

Resonant Optical Absorption in Semiconductor Quantum Wells

We have calculated the intraband photon absorption coefficients of hot two-dimensional electrons interacting with polar-optical phonon modes in quantum wells. The dependence of the photon absorption coefficients on the photon wavelength λ is obtained both by using the quantum mechanical theory and by the balance-equation theory. It is found that the photon absorption spectrum displays a local resonant maximum, corresponding to LO energy, and the absorption peak vanishes with increasing the electronic temperature.     

A four-level “Ξ-system”: Exact solvability and effective evolution operators via multiple scales

Properties of a four-level atomic system interacting with one and two modes of the electromagneticfield in a “Ξ”-configuration are investigated. By linearization of the Hamiltonians we show that the corresponding mathematical models are exactly solvable. To obtain simpler effective Hamiltonians the perturbative method of multiple scales is applied. The lowest-order corrections to the resulting effective evolution operators are also calculated.     

Influence of preparation method on SrMoO4 impurity content and magnetotransport properties of double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 polycrystals

The magnetic and electric properties of the Sr₂FeMoO₆ compound produced under different preparation conditions were studied. Depending on the preparation condition, a strong variation in the nonmagnetic SrMoO₄ impurity content was found, which in turn determined the metallic or semiconducting behavior of the resistivity of the Sr₂FeMoO₆ compound. There was also evidence that SrMoO₄ played a crucial role in modifying the low magnetic field intergrain tunneling magnetoresistance in Sr₂FeMoO₆. In addition, we have established a simple method to prepare the single phase Sr₂FeMoO₆ polycrystals.     

Anomalous PL brightening caused by partial Auger recombination of a (D, X) complex during an impact ionization avalanche in n-GaAs

Partial Auger recombination of the (D⁰, X) bound-exciton in n-GaAs at 4.2 K during an impact ionization avalanche under an applied pulse voltage has been investigated. The bright photoluminescence (PL)-pattern observed by applying the pulse voltage, characterizes well the formation of a current density filament. The observation of the bright PL spectra inside the current density filament gives a quite new result concerning the partial Auger recombination process of the (D⁰, X) complex, leaving the neutral donor in the excited states.
