In this article, we focus our attention on the relation between instrumented indentation tests and the prediction by means of finite element calculations. To this end, a finite strain viscoplasticity model of Perzyna-type with non-linear isotropic and kinematic hardening is calibrated at experimental data of steel S690QL. A particular concept for conducting uniaxial tensile and compression tests is taken up in order to represent the basic rate-dependent material behavior. In this respect, an algorithmic framework of material parameter identification using finite elements is proposed leading to a two-stage procedure in the case of the underlying rate-dependent constitutive model. On the basis of the termination points of relaxation the rate-independent equilibrium stress state can be identified and all viscous parts of the model are obtained using rate-dependent loading paths. Finally, use is made of finite elements for predicting indentation experiments, which results in a critical view on modeling and parameter identification on the basis of experimental results occurring in instrumented indentation tests.  相似文献

The model developed in this Note makes it possible to determine the value of the mean indentation pressure usually named hardness from the elastoplastic properties of materials and also the shape of the cone or that of the wedge. The approximation rests upon the definition of a linear elastic solid which has the same indentation pressure as the material actually indented. Cases of cone and wedge indentation are studied. A method to determine the uniaxial stress–strain curve of materials from indentation tests is given. The results are validated using finite element simulations. To cite this article: G. Usually when analyzing the mechanical response of foam-cored fiber-reinforced composite sandwich structures to localized static loading, the face sheets are treated as a linear-elastic material and no damage initiation and growth is considered. However, practice shows that at higher indentation magnitudes damage develops in the face sheet in the area of contact with the indentor, which could lead to local failure of the face laminate due to the loss of bending stiffness and strength. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to develop a damage model for predicting the local failure in the composite face sheet and its influence on the load–displacement behavior of sandwich structures under local loading. For this purpose, the Hoffman failure criterion is incorporated into a finite element modeling procedure using the ABAQUS program system. Results deducted from the modeling procedure are compared with experimental data obtained in the case of static indentation tests performed on sandwich beam specimens using steel cylindrical indentors. It is shown that taking into account the damage in the face sheet leads to a substantial improvement in the performance of the model when simulating the mechanical behavior of the sandwich structures at higher indentation values.  相似文献

The introduction of controlled gradients in plastic properties is known to influence the resistance to damage and cracking at contact surfaces in many tribological applications. In order to assess potentially beneficial effects of plastic property gradients in tribological applications, it is essential first to develop a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the effects of yield strength and strain hardening exponent on contact deformation under the most fundamental contact condition: normal indentation. To date, however, systematic and quantitative studies of plasticity gradient effects on indentation response have not been completed. A comprehensive parametric study of the mechanics of normal indentation of plastically graded materials was therefore undertaken in this work by recourse to finite element method (FEM) computations. On the basis of a large number of computational simulations, a general methodology for assessing instrumented indentation response of plastically graded materials is formulated so that quantitative interpretations of depth-sensing indentation experiments could be performed. The specific case of linear variation in yield strength with depth below the indented surface is explored in detail. Universal dimensionless functions are extracted from FEM simulations so as to predict the indentation load versus depth of penetration curves for a wide variety of plastically graded engineering metals and alloys for interpretation of, and comparisons with, experimental results. Furthermore, the effect of plasticity gradient on the residual indentation pile-up profile is systematically studied. The computations reveal that pile-up of the graded alloy around the indenter, for indentation with increasing yield strength beneath the surface, is noticeably higher than that for the two homogeneous reference materials that constitute the bounding conditions for the graded material. Pile-up is also found to be an increasing function of yield strength gradient and a decreasing function of frictional coefficient. The stress and plastic strain distributions under the indenter tip with and without plasticity gradient are also examined to rationalize the predicted trends. In Part II of this paper, we compare the predictions of depth-sensing indentation and pile-up response with experiments on a specially made, graded model Ni-W alloy with controlled gradients in nanocrystalline grain size.  相似文献

The indentation size effect has been observed for many years and is usually associated with increasing hardness as the depth of indentation is reduced for pyramidal indenters. The indentation size effect for spherical indenters has recently been associated with an increase in the yield stress of metals proportional to the inverse cube root of indenter radius [Spary, I.J., Bushby, A.J., Jennett, N.M., 2006. On the indentation size effect in spherical indentation. Philos. Mag. 86 (33), 5581-5593]. Here we investigate ceramic materials where the yield point is high enough to be easily distinguished in nanoindentation tests. A robust method for determining the yield point from a nanoindentation test with spherical indenters is presented. The results for a range of ceramics confirm that the increase in yield pressure is directly proportional to the inverse cube root of indenter radius. Furthermore, the yield pressure is also shown to be proportional to the inverse square root of the contact radius. Revisiting data in the literature shows that this inverse square root relationship is also true for pyramidal indenters. This implies that the indentation size effect is driven by the contact area rather than by the depth of indentation or by the indenter radius.  相似文献

Using static atomistic simulations, we study the full details of the mechanism by which dislocations homogeneously nucleate beneath the surface of a initially defect-free crystal during indentation. The mechanism involves the collective motion of a finite disk of atoms over two adjacent slip planes, the diameter of which depends on the indenter size. The nucleation mechanism highlights the need for nonlocal considerations in the development of a nucleation criterion. We review three nucleation criteria from the literature, each of which is based on purely local measures of the state of stress, and show that none are sufficiently general to predict nucleation in realistic atomic systems. We then propose a criterion based on an eigenmode analysis of the atomic-scale acoustic tensor. We demonstrate the accuracy of the criterion, which also works in the presence of existing topological defects like free surfaces or dislocation cores. The dependence of the size of the nucleated disk on the indenter radius leads to a self-similar nucleation process and virtually no indentation size effect (ISE), suggesting that homogeneous nucleation is only possible for very small indenters.  相似文献

The time-dependent behavior of bulk polymer film and wire with polymer insulation is studied using indentation. The indenter is displaced into the material at a constant rate and then held at a fixed indentation depth to monitor load relaxation. A finite element simulation of the experiment is performed; this analysis is parameterized in terms of the unknown shear compliance modeled as a Prony series. An optimization method is then presented to determine the unknown material parameters by minimizing the RMS error between the model and the experimental data. The method is demonstrated with poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) films after thermal aging and pristine polyethylene sheet; excellent agreement between the model and the data is demonstrated. The method is also demonstrated to successfully characterize the material properties for the compression of a wire with PVC insulation; the resulting properties are then shown to adequately predict the crossed-cylinder indentation behavior of the same wire using a 3D finite element model. The chief benefit of the method is that an analytical solution method is not required for its implementation; as such, the optimization approach can be readily applied to the determination of material properties from arbitrarily complex experimental geometries.

This work studies numerically the tribological behavior of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) under different frictional contact conditions, using a boundary element methodology. The formulation uses the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with an explicit approach for fundamental solutions evaluation, for computing the elastic influence coefficients. To enforce the contact constraints on the potential contact zone: Signorini’s contact conditions and an orthotropic law of friction, contact operators over the augmented Lagrangian are considered in the formulation. The methodology and the proposed algorithm are applied to study two types of glass FRP and two types of carbon FRP, with the same fiber volume fraction, under frictional contact. In these studies, it can be observed how the fiber orientation and sliding orientation affect the normal and tangential contact compliance, as well as the contact traction distribution. Furthermore, the formulation considers a micromechanics model for FRP that allows also to study the influence of fiber volume fraction on normal and tangential contact compliances.  相似文献

When dynamic load is applied on a granular assembly, the time-dependent dynamic load and initial static load (such as gravity stress) act together on individual particles. In order to better understand how dynamic load triggers the micro-structure's evolution and furtherly the ensemble behavior of a granular assembly, we propose a criterion to recognize the major propagation path of dynamic load in 2D granular materials, called the “dynamic force chain”. Two steps are involved in recognizing dynamic force chains: (1) pick out particles with dynamic load larger than the threshold stress, where the attenuation of dynamic stress with distance is considered; (2) among which quasi-linear arrangement of three or more particles are identified as a force chain. The spatial distribution of dynamic force chains in indentation of granular materials provides a direct measure of dynamic load diffusion. The statistical evolution of dynamic force chains shows strong correlation with the indentation behaviors.  相似文献
