For a long time it has been a challenging goal to identify all orthogonal polynomial systems that occur as eigenfunctions of a linear differential equation. One of the widest classes of such eigenfunctions known so far, is given by Koornwinder’s generalized Jacobi polynomials with four parameters and determining the orthogonality measure on the interval . The corresponding differential equation of order is presented here as a linear combination of four elementary components which make the corresponding differential operator widely accessible for applications. In particular, we show that this operator is symmetric with respect to the underlying scalar product and thus verify the orthogonality of the eigenfunctions. 相似文献

Some philosophers have claimed that it is meaningless or paradoxical to consider the probability of a probability. Others have however argued that second-order probabilities do not pose any particular problem. We side with the latter group. On condition that the relevant distinctions are taken into account, second-order probabilities can be shown to be perfectly consistent.May the same be said of an infinite hierarchy of higher-order probabilities? Is it consistent to speak of a probability of a probability, and of a probability of a probability of a probability, and so on, ad infinitum? We argue that it is, for it can be shown that there exists an infinite system of probabilities that has a model. In particular, we define a regress of higher-order probabilities that leads to a convergent series which determines an infinite-order probability value. We demonstrate the consistency of the regress by constructing a model based on coin-making machines. 相似文献

In this paper, we study orbital stability of peakons for the generalized modified Camassa–Holm (gmCH) equation, which is a natural higher-order generalization of the modified Camassa–Holm (mCH) equation, and admits Hamiltonian form and single peakons. We first show that the single peakon is the usual weak solution of the PDEs. Some sign invariant properties and conserved densities are presented. Next, by constructing the corresponding auxiliary function and establishing a delicate polynomial inequality relating to the two conserved densities with the maximal value of approximate solutions, the orbital stability of single peakon of the gmCH equation is verified. We introduce a new approach to prove the key inequality, which is different from that used for the mCH equation. This extends the result on the stability of peakons for the mCH equation (Qu et al. 2013) [36] successfully to the higher-order case, and is helpful to understand how higher-order nonlinearities affect the dispersion dynamics. 相似文献
