Revisiting Gouy phase

The aim of this paper is to highlight the added value of the generalized Gouy phase shift introduced by Siegman. Although suited for optical systems study, including those more complex than free space, we note that it did not meet the use that it deserves so far. The analysis of the whole of the ideas and analytical approaches associated to the important concept of the Gouy phase proves its effectiveness.

Usually, the resonance condition is systematically built on the basis of the equivalent empty cavity. Unfortunately, this approach does not cover some of the useful parameters of the real resonator. By means of the generalized Gouy phase and the self-consistent complex parameter q, we derive here a new approach for the calculation of the resonance condition for the real cavity. Moreover, the use of the generalized Gouy phase clearly simplifies the study of resonators, while making it possible to avoid the use of the Huygens’ Fresnel integral.

Time-marching numerical schemes for the electric field integral equation on a straight thin wire

We derive and analyse four algorithms for computing the current induced on a thin straight wire by a transient electric field. They all involve solving the thin wire electric field integral equations (EFIEs) and consist of a very accurate differential equations solver together with various schemes to approximate the vector potential integral equation. We carry out a rigorous numerical stability analysis of each of these methods. This has not previously been done for solution schemes for the thin wire EFIEs. Each scheme is shown to be stable and convergent provided the radius of the wire is small enough for the thin wire equations to be a valid model.

Some integral inequalities inN independent variables

Some new linear and nonlinear integral inequalities of Volterra-type inn independent variables are established. They improve and contain the main results of A. Corduneanu^[7] which in turn extend a number of known results in the literature. An application to certain initial value problem of partial differential equation is also indicated.

Trefftz,collocation, and other boundary methods—A comparison

In this article we survey the Trefftz method (TM), the collocation method (CM), and the collocation Trefftz method (CTM). We also review the coupling techniques for the interzonal conditions, which include the indirect Trefftz method, the original Trefftz method, the penalty plus hybrid Trefftz method, and the direct Trefftz method. Other boundary methods are also briefly described. Key issues in these algorithms, including the error analysis, are addressed. New numerical results are reported. Comparisons among TMs and other numerical methods are made. It is concluded that the CTM is the simplest algorithm and provides the most accurate solution with the best numerical stability. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Continuity of the Solution Map in Parametric Affine Variational Inequalities

A systematic study of the upper semicontinuity and the lower semicontinuity of the solution map in parametric affine variational inequalities is given in this paper. Several examples are constructed to analyze the results. This work was supported by Korea Research Foundation Grant (KRF 2001-015-DP0049), the APEC Postdoctoral Fellowships Program, and the KOSEF Brain Pool Program.     

Monotonic solutions of a quadratic integral equation of fractional order

In the paper we indicate an error made in the proof of the main result of the paper [M.A. Darwish, On quadratic integral equation of fractional orders, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 311 (2005) 112-119]. Moreover, we provide correct proof of a slightly modified version of the mentioned result. The main tool used in our proof is the technique associated with the Hausdorff measure of noncompactness.
