The evolution of invariant manifolds in Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcations

We consider the evolution of the stable and unstable manifolds of an equilibrium point of a Hamiltonian system of two degrees of freedom which depends on a parameter, ν. The eigenvalues of the linearized system are complex for ν<0 and pure imaginary for ν>0. Thus, for ν<0 the equilibrium has a two-dimensional stable manifold and a two-dimensional unstable manifold, but for ν>0 these stable and unstable manifolds are gone. If the sign of a certain term in the normal form is positive then for small negative ν the stable and unstable manifolds of the system are either identical or must have transverse intersection. Thus, either the system is totally degenerate or the system admits a suspended Smale horseshoe as an invariant set.

On the Ulam stability of Jensen and Jensen type mappings on restricted domains

In 1941 Hyers solved the well-known Ulam stability problem for linear mappings. In 1951 Bourgin was the second author to treat this problem for additive mappings. In 1982-1998 Rassias established the Hyers-Ulam stability of linear and nonlinear mappings. In 1983 Skof was the first author to solve the same problem on a restricted domain. In 1998 Jung investigated the Hyers-Ulam stability of more general mappings on restricted domains. In this paper we introduce additive mappings of two forms: of “Jensen” and “Jensen type,” and achieve the Ulam stability of these mappings on restricted domains. Finally, we apply our results to the asymptotic behavior of the functional equations of these types.     

Continuous modified Newton’s-type method for nonlinear operator equations

A nonlinear operator equation F(x)=0, F:H→H, in a Hilbert space is considered. Continuous Newton’s-type procedures based on a construction of a dynamical system with the trajectory starting at some initial point x ₀ and becoming asymptotically close to a solution of F(x)=0 as t→+∞ are discussed. Well-posed and ill-posed problems are investigated. The Dial-a-Ride Problem (DARP): Variants,modeling issues and algorithms

The Dial-a-Ride Problem (DARP) consists of designing vehicle routes and schedules for n users who specify pick-up and drop-off requests between origins and destinations. The aim is to plan a set of m minimum cost vehicle routes capable of accommodating as many users as possible, under a set of constraints. The most common example arises in door-to-door transportation for elderly or disabled people. The purpose of this article is to review the scientific literature on the DARP. The main features of the problem are described and classified and some modeling issues are discussed. Exposed points and extremal problems in H1 on a bidisc

In this paper, we consider extremal problems on H¹ when ? is a rational function, ? is a product of one variable functions or ? = |f|/f for some outer function f in H¹ such that f(z, w) has a good property with respect to w for a.e. z. Modelling and optimal control of coupled structural acoustic systems with piezoelectric elements

We construct a model of a shell with piezoelectric elements (patches) that take into account the mutual influence of deformations and electric fields. Coupled problems for the shell with piezoelectric patches and an acoustic field, are studied and results on the existence and the uniqueness are obtained. For this system we consider an optimal control problem on noise attenuation and obtain results on the existence, the uniqueness, necessary and sufficient conditions of optimality. A note on a characterization of P-matrices

In this note we show that the characterization results for P-matrices due to K.G. Murty and A. Tamir which state that a given square matrixM of ordern is a P-matrix if and only if the linear complementarity problem (q, M) has a unique solution for allq in a specified finite subset of ⁿ depending onM are incorrect whenn > 3.Research supported by Dr. K.S.
