Statistical issues in measurement

Measurement theories are traditionally couched in algebraic terms, which makes them unsuitable for statistical testing. A probabilistic recasting of these theories is proposed here. It is observed then that an axiom of probabilistic measurement has typically the form of a logical polynomial, the structure of which induces a particular partition of the parameter space, giving rise to a calss of statistical problems for which the null hypothesis is a union of convex polyhedrons. This is a consequence of the fact that a logical polynomial can always be rewritten in normal form, that is, as a disjunction of conjunctions. A likelihood ratio method is worked out in a couple of exemplary cases. One of these examples provides a test of transitivity, a property which lies at the heart of ordinal measurement.

Local generalized empirical estimation of regression

Let f(x) be the density of a design variable X and m(x) = E[Y\X = x] the regression function. Then m(x) - G(x)/f(x), where G(x) = m(x)f(x). The Dirac δ-function is used to define a generalized empirical function Gn (x) for G(x) whose expectation equals G(x). This generalized empirical function exists only in the space of Schwartz distributions, so we introduce a local polynomial of order p approximation to Gn(.) which provides estimators of the function G(x) and its derivatives. The density f(x) can be estimated in a similar manner. The resulting local generalized empirical estimator (LGE) of m(x) is exactly the Nadaraya-Watson estimator at interior points when p = 1, but on the boundary the estimator automatically corrects the boundary effect. Asymptotic normality of the estimator is established. Asymptotic expressions for the mean squared errors are obtained and used in bandwidth selection. Boundary behavior of the estimators is investigated in details. We use Monte Carlo simulations to show that the

Specht modules and chromatic polynomials

An explicit formula for the chromatic polynomials of certain families of graphs, called bracelets', is obtained. The terms correspond to irreducible representations of symmetric groups. The theory is developed using the standard bases for the Specht modules of representation theory, and leads to an effective means of calculation.     

The Minimality Properties of Chebyshev Polynomials and Their Lacunary Series

By considering four kinds of Chebyshev polynomials, an extended set of (real) results are given for Chebyshev polynomial minimality in suitably weighted Hölder norms on [–1,1], as well as (L ) minimax properties, and best L ₁ sufficiency requirements based on Chebyshev interpolation. Finally we establish best L _p , L and L ₁ approximation by partial sums of lacunary Chebyshev series of the form _i=0 a ⁱ _b ⁱ(x) where _n (x) is a Chebyshev polynomial and b is an odd integer 3. A complete set of proofs is provided.     

An extension of Warnaar's matrix inversion

We present a necessary and sufficient condition for two matrices given by two bivariate functions to be inverse to each other with certainty in the cases of Krattenthaler formula and Warnaar's elliptic matrix inversion. Immediate consequences of our result are some known functions and a constructive approach to derive new matrix inversions from known ones.
