Mappings on Spaces of Continuous Functions

Let X and Y be locally compact Hausdorff spaces and T : C₀(X) C₀(Y) a ring homomorphism. We completely characterize such homomorphisms and show that if T is R-linear, then T is either C-linear or C-antilinear. In any case T is continuous and there is a continuous map : Y X such that Tf = f o , f C₀(X) (if T is C-linear) or (if T is C-antilinear). Thus, extending a result of Mólnar, we also derive the general form of an isometry T.AMS Subject Classification (2000): primary 46J05, 46E25(deceased) Passed away on 24 May 1999.     

The surjectivity of the canonical homomorphism from singular homology to Cech homology

Let be a locally -connected compact metric space. Then, the canonical homomorphism from the singular homology group to the Cech homology group is surjective. Consequently, if a compact metric space is locally connected, then the canonical homomorphism from to is surjective.

     

Are covering (enveloping) morphisms minimal?

We prove that for certain classes of modules such that direct sums of -covers ( -envelopes) are -covers ( -envelopes), -covering ( -enveloping) homomorphisms are always right (left) minimal. As a particular case we see that over noetherian rings, essential monomorphisms are left minimal. The same type of results are given when direct products of -covers are -covers. Finally we prove that over commutative noetherian rings, any direct product of flat covers of modules of finite length is a flat cover.     

Asymptotic exponential cones of Metzler matrices and their use in the solution of an algebraic problem

The aim of this paper is that of investigating the asymptotic exponential cone of a single Metzler matrix, introduced in [23], and of defining and analysing the new concept of asymptotic exponential cone of a family of Metzler matrices (along a certain direction). These results will provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the solvability of an interesting algebraic problem that arises in the context of continuous-time positive switched systems and, specifically, in the investigation of the reachability property [21,22,25].     

Numerical semigroups with many gaps of the same parity

Let g _e (S) (respectively, g _o (S)) be the number of even (respectively, odd) gaps of a numerical semigroup S. In this work we study and characterize the numerical semigroups S that verify 2|g _e (S)−g _o (S)|+1∈S. As a consequence we will see that every numerical semigroup can be represented by means of a numerical semigroup with maximal embedding dimension with all its minimal generators odd. On the generation of updates for quasi-Newton methods

We present a unified technique for updating approximations to Jacobian or Hessian matrices when any linear structure can be imposed. The updates are derived by variational means, where an operator-weighted Frobenius norm is used, and are finally expressed as solutions of linear equations and/or unconstrained extrema. A certain behavior of the solutions is discussed for certain perturbations of the operator and the constraints. Multiple secant relations are then considered. For the nonsparse case, an explicit family of updates is obtained including Broyden, DFP, and BFGS. For the case where some of the matrix elements are prescribed, explicit solutions are obtained if certain conditions are satisfied. When symmetry is assumed, we show, in addition, the connection with the DFP and BFGS updates.This work was partially supported by a grant from Control Data

A partial order in the knot table II

A partial order on the set of the prime knots can be defined by the existence of a surjective homomorphism between knot groups. In the previous paper, we determined the partial order in the knot table. In this paper, we prove that 31 and 41 are minimal elements. Further, we study which surjection a pair of a periodic knot and its quotient knot induces, and which surjection a degree one map can induce.     

Operator trigonometry of Hotelling correlation, Frobenius condition, Penrose twistor

Three new applications of the author’s operator trigonometry are presented. These take place in three diverse mathematical domains: matrix statistics, numerical analysis, and theoretical physics. The goal is to continue to develop and expand the scope of the operator trigonometry.     

Counting the number of indecomposable representations and a q-analogue of the Weyl-Kac denominator identity of type _n

By using Frobenius maps and F-stable representations,we count the number of isomor- phism classes of indecomposable representations with the fixed dimension vector of a species of type _n over a finite field,first,and then,as an application,give a q-analogue of the Weyl-Kac denominator identity of type _n.
