We revisit in this paper the theory of axisymmetric vortex rings in an ideal fluid. The boundary separating the vortex ring from the external (potential) flow is assumed of elliptic shape. For a given distribution of vorticity in the vortex core, we theoretically put into evidence the critical parameter for the existence of non-trivial solutions, thus confirming the numerical observation of Durst et al. [ZAMP 32 (1981) 156]. A sharp estimation of the critical threshold is analytically derived. Theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations using finite elements. A new numerical algorithm is presented and shown to display better performances compared to previous published algorithms using finite differences. The convergence of the iterative algorithm is proved using the theory of elliptic partial differential equations with discontinuous nonlinearities. 相似文献

We study the Jacobi osculating rank of geodesics on naturally reductive homogeneous manifolds and we apply this theory to the 3-dimensional case. Here, each non-symmetric, simply connected naturally reductive 3-manifold can be given as a principal bundle M3(κ,τ) over a surface of constant curvature κ, such that the curvature of its horizontal distribution is a constant τ>0, with τ2≠κ. Then, we prove that the Jacobi osculating rank of every geodesic of M3(κ,τ) is two except for the Hopf fibers, where it is zero. We study the coefficients in the expansion of Jack polynomials in terms of power sums. We express them as polynomials in the free cumulants of the transition measure of an anisotropic Young diagram. We conjecture that such polynomials have nonnegative integer coefficients. This extends recent results about normalized characters of the symmetric group. 相似文献

We study the complexity of automatic structures via well-established concepts from both logic and model theory, including ordinal heights (of well-founded relations), Scott ranks of structures, and Cantor–Bendixson ranks (of trees). We prove the following results: (1) The ordinal height of any automatic well-founded partial order is bounded by ωω. (2) The ordinal heights of automatic well-founded relations are unbounded below , the first non-computable ordinal. (3) For any computable ordinal α, there is an automatic structure of Scott rank at least α. Moreover, there are automatic structures of Scott rank . In this study, a Legendre collocation matrix method is presented to solve high-order Linear Fredholm integro-differential equations under the mixed conditions in terms of Legendre polynomials. The proposed method converts the equation and conditions to matrix equations, by means of collocation points on the interval [−1, 1], which corresponding to systems of linear algebraic equations with Legendre coefficients. Thus, by solving the matrix equation, Legendre coefficients and polynomial approach are obtained. We present and analyze a robust preconditioned conjugate gradient method for the higher order Lagrangian finite element systems of a class of elliptic problems. An auxiliary linear element stiffness matrix is chosen to be the preconditioner for higher order finite elements. Then an algebraic multigrid method of linear finite element is applied for solving the preconditioner. The optimal condition number which is independent of the mesh size is obtained.
