Recursive and explicit rules: How can we build student algebraic understanding?

Differing perspectives have been offered about student use of recursive and explicit rules. These include: (a) promoting the use of explicit rules over the use of recursive rules, and (b) encouraging student use of both recursive and explicit rules. This study sought to explore students’ use of recursive and explicit rules by examining the reasoning of 25 sixth-grade students, including a focus on four target students, as they approached tasks in which they were required to develop generalizations while using computer spreadsheets as an instructional tool. The results demonstrate the difficulty that students had moving from the successful use of recursive rules toward explicit rules. In particular, two students abandoned general reasoning, instead focusing on particular values in an attempt to construct explicit rules. It is recommended that students be encouraged to connect recursive and explicit rules as a potential means for constructing successful generalizations.     

Linear recurrence relations in the algebra of matrices and applications

We study here some linear recurrence relations in the algebra of square matrices. With the aid of the Cayley–Hamilton Theorem, we derive some explicit formulas for Aⁿ (nr) and e^tA for every r×r matrix A, in terms of the coefficients of its characteristic polynomial and matrices A^j, where 0jr−1.

Integrating algebra and proof in high school mathematics: An exploratory study

Frequently, in the US students’ work with proofs is largely concentrated to the domain of high school geometry, thus providing students with a distorted image of what proof entails, which is at odds with the central role that proof plays in mathematics. Despite the centrality of proof in mathematics, there is a lack of studies addressing how to integrate proof into other mathematical domains. In this paper, we discuss a teaching experiment designed to integrate algebra and proof in the high school curriculum. Algebraic proof was envisioned as the vehicle that would provide high school students the opportunity to learn not only about proof in a context other than geometry, but also about aspects of algebra. Results from the experiment indicate that students meaningfully learned about aspects of both algebra and proof in that they produced algebraic proofs involving multiple variables, based on conjectures they themselves generated.

Central Sets Theorem along filters and some combinatorial consequences

The Central Sets Theorem was introduced by H. Furstenberg and then afterwards several mathematicians have provided various versions and extensions of this theorem. All of these theorems deal with central sets, and its origin from the algebra of Stone–?ech compactification of arbitrary semigroup, say $\beta S$. It can be proved that every closed subsemigroup of $\beta S$ is generated by a filter. We will show that, under some restrictions, one can derive the Central Sets Theorem for any closed subsemigroup of $\beta S$. We will derive this theorem using the corresponding filter and its algebra. Later we will also deal with how the notions of largeness along filters are preserved under some well behaved homomorphisms and give some consequences.     

The Classification and Realization of Complete Lie Algebras with Commutative Nilpotent Radicals

in this paper, the classification and realization of complete Lie algebras withcommutative nilpotent radicals are given. From this, some results on the radicals of thesecomplete Lie algebras are obtained.
