The E-theoretic descent functor for groupoids

The paper establishes, for a wide class of locally compact groupoids Γ, the E-theoretic descent functor at the C^∗-algebra level, in a way parallel to that established for locally compact groups by Guentner, Higson and Trout. Section 2 shows that Γ-actions on a C₀(X)-algebra B, where X is the unit space of Γ, can be usefully formulated in terms of an action on the associated bundle B^?. Section 3 shows that the functor B→C^∗(Γ,B) is continuous and exact, and uses the disintegration theory of J. Renault. Section 4 establishes the existence of the descent functor under a very mild condition on Γ, the main technical difficulty involved being that of finding a Γ-algebra that plays the role of Cbcont(T,B) in the group case.

Generalization of Ulam stability problem for Euler-Lagrange quadratic mappings

In 1968 S.M. Ulam proposed the problem: “When is it true that by changing a little the hypotheses of a theorem one can still assert that the thesis of the theorem remains true or approximately true?” In 1978 P.M. Gruber proposed the Ulam type problem: “Suppose a mathematical object satisfies a certain property approximately. Is it then possible to approximate this object by objects, satisfying the property exactly?” In this paper we solve the generalized Ulam stability problem for non-linear Euler-Lagrange quadratic mappings satisfying approximately a mean equation and an Euler-Lagrange type functional equations in quasi-Banach spaces and p-Banach spaces.

Noether-Type Symmetries and Conservation Laws Via Partial Lagrangians

We show how one can construct conservation laws of Euler-Lagrange-type equations via Noether-type symmetry operators associated with what we term partial Lagrangians. This is even in the case when a system does not directly have a usual Lagrangian, e.g. scalar evolution equations. These Noether-type symmetry operators do not form a Lie algebra in general. We specify the conditions under which they do form an algebra. Furthermore, the conditions under which they are symmetries of the Euler-Lagrange-type equations are derived. Examples are given including those that admit a standard Lagrangian such as the Maxwellian tail equation, and equations that do not such as the heat and nonlinear heat equations. We also obtain new conservation laws from Noether-type symmetry operators for a class of nonlinear heat equations in more than two independent variables.     

On the stability of tangent bundle on double coverings

Let Y be a smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field k with char k≠2, and let π : X →Y be a double covering branched along a smooth divisor. We show that y_X is stable with respect to π~*H if the tangent bundle y_Y is semi-stable with respect to some ample line bundle H on Y.     

Characterization of energy minimizers in micromagnetics

We present a new characterization of minimizing sequences and possible minimizers (all called the minimizing magnetizations) for a nonlocal micromagnetic-like energy (without the exchange energy). Our method is to replace the nonlocal energy functional and its relaxation with certain local integral functionals on divergence-free fields obtained by a two-step minimization of some auxiliary augmented functionals. Through this procedure, the minimization problem becomes equivalent to the minimization of a new local variational functional, called the dual variational functional, which has a unique minimizer. We then precisely characterize the minimizing magnetizations of original nonlocal functionals in terms of the unique minimizer of the dual variational functional. Finally, we give some remarks and ideas on solving the dual minimization problem.     

Harmonic polynomial morphisms between Euclidean spaces
