Difference schemes on uniform grids performed by general discrete operators

Our aim is to set the foundations of a discrete vectorial calculus on uniform n-dimensional grids, that can be easily reformulated on general irregular grids. As a key tool we first introduce the notion of tangent space to any grid node. Then we define the concepts of vector field, field of matrices and inner products on the space of grid functions and on the space of vector fields, mimicking the continuous setting. This allows us to obtain the discrete analogous of the basic first order differential operators, gradient and divergence, whose composition define the fundamental second order difference operator. As an application, we show that all difference schemes, with constant coefficients, for first and second order differential operators with constant coefficients can be seen as difference operators of the form for suitable choices of q, and  . In addition, we characterize special properties of the difference scheme, such as consistency, symmetry and positivity in terms of q, and  .     

Equivalence of inverse Sturm-Liouville problems with boundary conditions rationally dependent on the eigenparameter

Three inverse problems for a Sturm-Liouville boundary value problem −y″+qy=λy, y(0)cosα=y′(0)sinα and y′(1)=f(λ)y(1) are considered for rational f. It is shown that the Weyl m-function uniquely determines α, f, and q, and is in turn uniquely determined by either two spectra from different values of α or by the Prüfer angle. For this it is necessary to produce direct results, of independent interest, on asymptotics and oscillation.     

Elliptic fibers over non-perfect residue fields

Kodaira and Néron classified and described the geometry of the special fibers of the Néron model of an elliptic curve defined over a discrete valuation ring with a perfect residue field. Tate described an algorithm to determine the special fiber type by manipulating the Weierstrass equation. In the case of non-perfect residue fields, we discover new fiber types which are not on the Kodaira-Néron list. We describe these new types and extend Tate's algorithm to deal with all discrete valuation rings. Specifically, we show how to translate a Weierstrass equation into a form where the reduction type may be easily determined. Having determined the special fiber type, we construct the regular model of the curve with explicit blow-up calculations. We also provide tables that serve as a simple reference for the algorithm and which succinctly summarize the results.

Demonstration of the stability or instability of multibreathers at low coupling

Whereas there exists a mathematical proof for one-site breathers stability, and an unpublished one for two-site breathers, the methods for determining the stability properties of multibreathers rely on numerical computation of the Floquet multipliers or on the weak nonlinearity approximation leading to discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Here we present a set of multibreather stability theorems (MST) that provides a simple method to determine multibreathers stability in Klein–Gordon systems. These theorems are based in the application of degenerate perturbation theory to Aubry’s band theory. We illustrate them with several examples.     

Computation of the eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville problems with parameter dependent boundary conditions using the regularized sampling method

The purpose in this paper is to compute the eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville problems with quite general separated boundary conditions nonlinear in the eigenvalue parameter using the regularized sampling method, an improvement on the method based on Shannon sampling theory, which does not involve any multiple integration and provides higher order estimates of the eigenvalues at a very low cost. A few examples shall be presented to illustrate the power of the method and a comparison made with the the exact eigenvalues obtained as squares of the zeros of the exact characteristic functions.

     

Nonparametric estimation of distributions with categorical and continuous data

In this paper we consider the problem of estimating an unknown joint distribution which is defined over mixed discrete and continuous variables. A nonparametric kernel approach is proposed with smoothing parameters obtained from the cross-validated minimization of the estimator's integrated squared error. We derive the rate of convergence of the cross-validated smoothing parameters to their ‘benchmark’ optimal values, and we also establish the asymptotic normality of the resulting nonparametric kernel density estimator. Monte Carlo simulations illustrate that the proposed estimator performs substantially better than the conventional nonparametric frequency estimator in a range of settings. The simulations also demonstrate that the proposed approach does not suffer from known limitations of the likelihood cross-validation method which breaks down with commonly used kernels when the continuous variables are drawn from fat-tailed distributions. An empirical application demonstrates that the proposed method can yield superior predictions relative to commonly used parametric models.     

Some Remarks on Left-Definite Hamiltonian Systems in the Regular Case

In the paper, a new method of constructing asymptotic solutions of differential equations on manifolds with singularities is presented. This method allows not only to widen essentially the space of asymptotics but also to obtain explicit formulas for asymptotic expansions, in particular, in the case when in a neighborhood of a singular point there exist strata of different dimensions.

FULL DISCRETE NONLINEAR GALERKIN METHOD FOR THE NAVIER-STOKES EQUATIONS

This paper deals with the inertial manifold and the approximate inertial manifold concepts of the Navier-Stokes equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and inertial algorithm. Furtheremore, we provide the error estimates of the approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes Equations.
