The steady state burning rate of vertically oriented slabs of poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) is numerically investigated. Model predictions are compared with measurements and results of the laminar boundary layer (LBL) theory. The numerical model provides a solution of the Favre-averaged Navier–Stokes equations coupled with sub-models for turbulence, combustion, soot production and radiation. The modelling of condensed phase processes is based on the one-dimensional heat transfer equation and pyrolysis is treated as a phase change using the latent heat approach. Results show that the pyrolysing region can be divided into three regions. In the laminar part of the flow (Gr x < 4.3 × 107), the predicted normalised burning rate, [mdot] p x, is a power-law function of Gr x with an exponent close to that of the LBL theory, surface re-radiation being the primary source of discrepancies. From the LBL theory for free flow, it is demonstrated that the local burning rate is inversely proportional to the shear velocity gradient. This is globally confirmed by numerical model results. At Gr x = 4.3 × 107 the change in slope of the burning rate observed experimentally, which indicates the end of the laminar flow region, is reproduced numerically. From Gr x = 2.5 × 109 model results show that the surface mass flux of pyrolyzate increases with x, in agreement with experimental data in literature.  相似文献

Interfacial energy is a fundamental physiochemical property of any multi-phase system. Among the most direct approaches for determining solid–liquid interfacial energy is a technique based on measuring the shape of grain boundary grooves in specimens subjected to a linear temperature gradient. This technique was adapted to crystallizing colloids in a gravitational field. Such colloids exhibit a freezing–melting phase transition and are important not only as self-assembling precursors to photonic crystals, but also as physical models of atomic and molecular systems. The grain boundary groove technique was tested using suspensions of sterically stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) spheres, which have been shown to closely approximate the hard sphere potential. Whereas isotropic models did not fit grain boundary groove data well, the capillary vector model, which is suitable for both isotropic and anisotropic surface energies, produced γ110?=?0.58?±?0.05 k B T2. This value of interfacial energy is in agreement with many of the published values for hard spheres, supporting the validity of our grain boundary groove technique adaptations to colloidal systems in a gravitational field. Finally, kinks observed in groove profiles suggest a minimum anisotropy parameter of ε?=?0.029 for hard spheres.  相似文献

The mechanism of serrated grain boundary formation and its effect on liquation behaviour have been studied in a wrought nickel-based superalloy – Alloy 263. It was newly discovered that grain boundaries are considerably serrated in the absence of γ?′-phase or M23C6 at the grain boundaries. An electron energy-loss spectroscopy study suggests that serration is triggered by the discontinuous segregation of C and Cr atoms at grain boundaries for the purpose of relieving the excessive elastic strain energy. The grain boundaries serrate to have specific segments approaching one {111} low-index plane at a boundary so that the interfacial free energy of the grain boundary can be decreased, which may be responsible for the driving force of the serration. The serrated grain boundaries effectively suppress grain coarsening and are highly resistant to liquation due to their lower wettability resulting from a lower interfacial energy of the grain boundary.  相似文献

Σ3 grain boundaries form as a result of either growth twinning or deformation twinning in face centered cubic (fcc) metals and play a crucial role in determining the mechanical and electrical properties and microstructural stability. We studied the structure and stability of Σ3 grain boundaries (GBs) in fcc metals by using topological analysis and atomistic simulations. Atomistic simulations were performed for Cu and Al with empirical interatomic potentials to reveal the influence of stacking fault energy on the morphology of the twinned grains. Three sets of tilt Σ3 GBs were studied with respect to the tilt axis parallel to ?111?, ?112?, and ?110?, respectively. We showed that Σ3{111} and Σ3{112} GBs are thermodynamically stable and the others will dissociate into terraced interfaces regardless of the stacking fault energy. The morphology of the nano-twinned grains in Cu is predicted from the above analysis and found to match with experiments.  相似文献

The effect of solid-solution alloying on grain boundary sliding (GBS) was investigated using pure magnesium and six kinds of Mg–X (X?=?Ag, Al, Li, Pb, Y and Zn) dilute binary solid solutions with an average grain size of 10?µm. A sharp increase in damping capacity caused by GBS was observed above a certain temperature. The temperature at which a sharp increase in damping capacity occurred depended on the alloying element. The addition of Y and Ag markedly increased the onset temperature (more than 100?K) for a sharp increase in damping capacity, whereas the addition of Zn, Al and Li slightly increased the onset temperature (less than 50?K) as compared with that for pure magnesium. Tensile tests at a temperature of 423?K revealed that the higher the onset temperature, the lower the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress. It is suggested that the former elements (Y and Ag) are more effective in suppressing GBS in magnesium alloys than the latter ones (Zn, Al and Li). The suppression of GBS was associated with low grain boundary energy, and the extent to which the energy is reduced depended on the alloying element. It was suggested that the change in the lattice parameter (the so-called c/a ratio) affects the grain boundary energy, and thus, the occurrence of GBS.  相似文献

A survey of previous studies on vacuum deposited metal films shows that in high frequency measurements, explicit reference to the effect of air-exposure is not made. The present work on bismuth films (in-situ and air-exposed) at dc and rf frequencies, carried out mainly to study the air-exposure effect, shows that in-situ dc and rf and exposed rf all show nearly the same resistivity for thick continuous films. But air-exposed dc film resistances, when compared to in-situ dc resistances, show that the grain boundary reflection coefficient, R gin Mayadas-Shatzkes model changes from 0·2 to 0·6. This is shown to be due to the grain boundary oxidation. The result is substantiated by rf measurements.  相似文献

Within group invariance theory we consider a constructive approach in order to define numerical transformation methods. These are initial-value methods for the solution of boundary value problems governed by ordinary differential equations. Here we consider the class of free boundary value problems governed by the most general second-order equation in normal form. For this class of problems the main theorem is concerned with the definition of an iterative transformation method. The definition of a noniterative method, applicable to a subclass of the original class of problems, follows as a corollary. Therefore, the proposed constructive approach allows us to establish a unifying framework for noniterative and iterative transformation methods.  相似文献

We here consider testing the hypothesis ofhomogeneity against the alternative of a two-component mixture of densities. The paper focuses on the asymptotic null distribution of 2 log n , where n is the likelihood ratio statistic. The main result, obtained by simulation, is that its limiting distribution appears pivotal (in the sense of constant percentiles over the unknown parameter), but model specific (differs if the model is changed from Poisson to normal, say), and is not at all well approximated by the conventional (2) 2 -distribution obtained by counting parameters. In Section 3, the binomial with sample size parameter 2 is considered. Via a simple geometric characterization the case for which the likelihood ratio is 1 can easily be identified and the corresponding probability is found. Closed form expressions for the likelihood ratio n are possible and the asymptotic distribution of 2 log n is shown to be the mixture giving equal weights to the one point distribution with all its mass equal to zero and the 2-distribution with 1 degree of freedom. A similar result is reached in Section 4 for the Poisson with a small parameter value (0.1), although the geometric characterization is different. In Section 5 we consider the Poisson case in full generality. There is still a positive asymptotic probability that the likelihood ratio is 1. The upper precentiles of the null distribution of 2 log n are found by simulation for various populations and shown to be nearly independent of the population parameter, and approximately equal to the (1–2)100 percentiles of (1) 2 . In Sections 6 and 7, we close with a study of two continuous densities, theexponential and thenormal with known variance. In these models the asymptotic distribution of 2 log n is pivotal. Selected (1–) 100 percentiles are presented and shown to differ between the two models.  相似文献
