Thermostability and polymorphism of theobroma oil and palm kernel oil as suppository bases

Thermal stability of pharmaceutical ingredients is an important aspect. In this study, we adopted differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to investigate thermal stability of suppository bases, theobroma oil (cocoa butter) and a palm kernel oil (PKO) blend. The study shows theobroma oil possesses six polymorphic forms whilst the palm kernel oil blend has three. Upon rescanning, the PKO blend does not show changes in the enthalpy of fusion and the melting point with time, whilst the theobroma oil shows significant reduction, and only regained its thermal stable state after 10 days. This indicates that PKO blend possesses better thermal stability.     

Enzyme production and profile by Aspergillus niger during solid substrate fermentation using palm kernel cake as substrate

The oil palm sector is one of the major plantation industries in Malaysia. Palm kernel cake is a byproduct of extracted palm kernel oil. Mostly palm kernel cake is wasted or is mixed with other nutrients and used as animal feed, especially for ruminant animals. Recently, palm kernel cake has been identified as an important ingredient for the formulation of animal feed, and it is also exported especially to Europe, South Korea, and Japan. It can barely be consumed by nonruminant (monogastric) animals owing to the high percentages of hemicellulose and cellulose contents. Palm kernel cake must undergo suitable pretreatment in order to decrease the percentage of hemicellulose and cellulose. One of the methods employed in this study is fermentation with microorganisms, particularly fungi, to partially degrade the hemicellulose and cellulose content. This work focused on the production of enzymes by Aspergillus niger and profiling using palm kernel cake as carbon source.     

Improved synthesis of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers by mutant Cupriavidus necator using the PHA synthase gene of Chromobacterium sp. USM2 with high affinity towards 3HV

Unlike polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) copolymers, the controlled and efficient synthesis of PHA terpolymers from triglycerides and fatty acids are yet to be established. This study demonstrates the production of P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymer with a wide range of 3HV monomer compositions from mixtures of crude palm kernel oil and 3HV precursors using a mutant Cupriavidus necator PHB⁻4 transformant harboring the PHA synthase gene (phaC) of a locally isolated Chromobacterium sp. USM2. The PHA synthase of Chromobacterium has an unusually high affinity towards 3HV monomer. P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers with 3HV monomer composition ranging from 2 to 91 mol% were produced. Generation of 3HHx monomers was affected by the concentration and feeding time of 3HV precursor. P(3HB-co-24 mol% 3HV-co-7 mol% 3HHx) exhibited mechanical properties similar to that of common low-density polyethylene. P(3HB-co-3HV-co-3HHx) terpolymers with a wide range of 3HV molar fraction had been successfully synthesized by adding lower concentrations of 3HV precursors and using a PHA synthase with high affinity towards 3HV monomer.     

Biosynthesis and characterization of novel polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers with high elastic property by Cupriavidus necator PHB4 transformant

We attempted to synthesize novel polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) containing new 3-hydroxy-4-methylvalerate (3H4MV) monomer from the transformed strain of Cupriavidus necator PHB⁻4 harboring the PHA synthase gene of Chromobacterium sp. USM2 (phaC_Cs). Novel PHA containing SCL and MCL monomers were successfully synthesized from crude palm kernel oil (CPKO) and isocaproic acid. Results showed that P(3HB-co-1 mol% 3HV-co-3 mol% 3H4MV-co-18 mol% 3HHx) possessed higher thermal stability, higher elastomeric behavior at room temperature and higher ductility than the P(3HB-co-5 mol% 3HHx). The novel PHA film was found to possess an interesting rubber-like elasticity and flexibility property which has not been reported. The soil surface degradation study showed that the novel PHA film was degraded faster than the 3HB homopolymer and copolymer with 5 mol% of 3HHx.     

Optical time-resolved study of the excitation dynamics*

Transient behaviour of the excited states originated from the neutral and the charged species is discussed using data from time-resolved experiments. Complex transient characteristics obtained for the slightly charged poly-(bithiophene) film during electrochemical doping were explained in terms of sequential molar fraction changes of the neutral species, the radical cation and the π-dimerized radical cations. Femtosecond transient absorption measurement carried out in time range of 0-4 ns for a two-photon excited dye reveals a multi-exponent decay with well separated relaxation times and the distinct relaxation mechanisms. At high irradiance and a sufficient fluence, the multi-photon excitation processes affect the subpicosecond response and lead to formation of the photo-products.     

Dahlberg's theorem in higher co-dimension

In 1977 the celebrated theorem of B. Dahlberg established that the harmonic measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff measure on a Lipschitz graph of dimension $n?1$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, and later this result has been extended to more general non-tangentially accessible domains and beyond.In the present paper we prove the first analogue of Dahlberg's theorem in higher co-dimension, on a Lipschitz graph Γ of dimension d in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$, $d<n?1$, with a small Lipschitz constant. We construct a linear degenerate elliptic operator L such that the corresponding harmonic measure ${\omega }_L$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff measure on Γ. More generally, we provide sufficient conditions on the matrix of coefficients of L which guarantee the mutual absolute continuity of ${\omega }_L$ and the Hausdorff measure.

Let M be a closed spin manifold and let N be a closed manifold. For maps and Riemannian metrics g on M and h on N, we consider the Dirac operator of the twisted Dirac bundle . To this Dirac operator one can associate an index in . If M is 2‐dimensional, one gets a lower bound for the dimension of the kernel of out of this index. We investigate the question whether this lower bound is obtained for generic tupels .     

Transition probabilities of Lévy‐type processes: Parametrix construction

We present an existence result for Lévy‐type processes which requires only weak regularity assumptions on the symbol with respect to the space variable x. Applications range from existence and uniqueness results for Lévy‐driven SDEs with Hölder continuous coefficients to existence results for stable‐like processes and Lévy‐type processes with symbols of variable order. Moreover, we obtain heat kernel estimates for a class of Lévy and Lévy‐type processes. The paper includes an extensive list of Lévy(‐type) processes satisfying the assumptions of our results.     

Continuum versus discrete networks,graph Laplacians,and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

Motivated by applications to machine learning, we construct a reversible and irreducible Markov chain whose state space is a certain collection of measurable sets of a chosen l.c.h. space $\mathfrak{X}$. We study the resulting network (connected undirected graph), including transience, Royden and Riesz decompositions, and kernel factorization. We describe a construction for Hilbert spaces of signed measures which comes equipped with a new notion of reproducing kernels and there is a unique solution to a regularized optimization problem involving the approximation of $L^2$ functions by functions of finite energy. The latter has applications to machine learning (for Markov random fields, for example).
