Lyapunov-type inequality for a class of even-order differential equations

In this paper, we generalize the well-known Lyapunov-type inequality for second-order linear differential equations to a class of even-order linear differential equations, the results of this paper are new and generalize some known inequalities in the literatures.     

On the fourth-order difference equation for the associated Meixner polynomials

Three equivalent forms of the fourth-order difference equation obeyed by the associated Meixner polynomials (with a nonnegative real association parameter) are derived from a refinement of a recent result due to Letessier et al. (1996).     

Limit Gaussian Behavior of the Solutions of the Multidimensional Burger'; Equation with Weak-Dependent Initial Conditions

Asymptotic normality of the solutions of the initial-value problems for multidimensional Burgers' equation with weakly dependent possible non-Gaussian initial condition is proved.     

On the Positivity of the Stochastic Heat Equation

We study the positivity preserving properties of the heat equation with a white noise potential and random initial condition. Moreover, we find a generalized Feynman--Kac formula for the solution of the problem using methods from the white noise analysis. The initial condition can anticipate the driving white noise. We show that the solution is positive, when the random initial condition is positive. For the case of a time-dependent white noise potential, we give a special representation of the solution together with regularity results.

Analysis of expanded mixed methods for fourth-order elliptic problems

The recently proposed expanded mixed formulation for numerical solution of second-order elliptic problems is here extended to fourth-order elliptic problems. This expanded formulation for the differential problems under consideration differs from the classical formulation in that three variables are treated, i.e., the displacement, the stress, and the moment tensors. It works for the case where the coefficient of the differential equations is small and does not need to be inverted, or for the case in which the stress tensor of the equations does not need to be symmetric. Based on this new formulation, various mixed finite elements for fourth-order problems are considered; error estimates of quasi-optimal or optimal order depending upon the mixed elements are derived. Implementation techniques for solving the linear system arising from these expanded mixed methods are discussed, and numerical results are presented. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Analytical solutions for the energy distribution of charged particles in a weak electric field

The paper deals with the stationary distribution of charged particles moving in a material medium, having scattering and absorption properties, in which a uniform electric field is present. The purpose of the work is finding analytical solutions in simplified but physically significant situations and comparing different approximations based on a spherical-harmonics expansion of the velocity distribution. Perturbation models

A Markov chain (with a discrete state space and a continuous parameter) is perturbed by forcing a chain to return to “permissible” states whenever it happens to enter “forbidden” states, with returns governed by a replacement distribution.The compensation method is employed to obtain the distribution for the modified chain, in terms of the original chain and the perturbation mechanism.Emphasis is placed on ergodic chains, and interpretation of results in terms of perturbation theory of semi-groups and the ergodic potential theory (based on the fundamental matrix of a chain) is mentioned.     

The generalized Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piskunov equation

Nonlinear nonlocal equations of mathematical physics such as the K.P.P. equation, the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the Witham equation for water waves et al. are solved by decomposition.     

Peripheral and ADI hopscotch methods for two dimensional parabolic and elliptic equations with a mixed term

The peripheral and ADI hopscotch methods are extended to solve problems in two space dimensions with a mixed derivative term. The method is compared numerically with existing hopscotch methods.
