A bivariate non-homogeneous birth and death model for predator–prey interactions

We propose a bivariate non-homogeneous birth and death process as a model for predator–prey interactions. Its expectation is periodic, as it is a solution to the classical Lotka–Volterra system. Moreover, the mean age at extinction, as defined in Kendall (1948), is infinite.     

Estimating quadrature errors for analytic functions using kernel representations and biorthogonal systems

Summary. For analytic functions the remainder term of quadrature rules can be represented as a contour integral with a complex kernel function. From this representation different remainder term estimates involving the kernel are obtained. It is studied in detail how polynomial biorthogonal systems can be applied to derive sharp bounds for the kernel function. It is shown that these bounds are practical to use and can easily be computed. Finally, various numerical examples are presented. Note on hit-and-miss topologies

This is a continuation of [19]. We characterize first and second countability of the general hit-and-miss hyperspace topologyτ ₊ ^Δ for weakly-R ₀ base spaces. Further, metrizability ofτ ₊ ^Δ is characterized with no preliminary conditions on the base space and the generating family of closed sets and a new proof on uniformizability (i.e. complete regularity) ofτ ₊ ^Δ is given in this general setting, thus generalizing results of [3], [5] and [6].     

A solution to the problem of Lp-L^p-maximal regularity

Analysis of a Cahn–Hilliard–Brinkman model for tumour growth with chemotaxis

Phase field models recently gained a lot of interest in the context of tumour growth models. Typically Darcy-type flow models are coupled to Cahn–Hilliard equations. However, often Stokes or Brinkman flows are more appropriate flow models. We introduce and mathematically analyse a new Cahn–Hilliard–Brinkman model for tumour growth allowing for chemotaxis. Outflow boundary conditions are considered in order not to influence tumour growth by artificial boundary conditions. Existence of global-in-time weak solutions is shown in a very general setting.     

On the complexity of the Leibniz hierarchy

We prove that the problem of determining whether a finite logical matrix determines an algebraizable logic is complete for EXPTIME. The same result holds for the classes of order algebraizable, weakly algebraizable, equivalential and protoalgebraic logics. Finally, the same problem for the class of truth-equational logic is shown to be hard for EXPTIME.     

The projective dimension of three cubics is at most 5

Let R be a polynomial ring over a field and I an ideal generated by three forms of degree three. Motivated by Stillman's question, Engheta proved that the projective dimension $\mathrm{pd}(R/I)$ of $R/I$ is at most 36, although the example with largest projective dimension he constructed has $\mathrm{pd}(R/I)=5$. Based on computational evidence, it had been conjectured that $\mathrm{pd}(R/I)\le 5$. In the present paper we prove this conjectured sharp bound.
