On a generalized $L_2$ projection and some related stability estimates in Sobolev spaces

Summary. In this paper we investigate a stability estimate needed in hybrid finite and boundary element methods, especially in hybrid coupled domain decomposition methods including mortar finite elements. This stability estimate is equivalent to the stability of a generalized projection in certain Sobolev spaces. Using piecewise linear trial spaces and appropriate piecewise constant test spaces, the stability of the generalized projection is proved assuming some mesh conditions locally. U-statistics in Banach spaces are considered and thoroughly investigated. The martingale structure, estimates of moments, the law of large numbers, the central limit theorem, the invariance principle, estimates of the rate of convergence, and large deviations are established     

An analytic approach for the analysis of rotations in fringe-balanced binary search trees

This paper presents an analytic approach to the construction cost of fringe-balanced binary search trees. In [7], Mahmoud used a bottom-up approach and an urn model of Pólya. The present method is top-down and uses differential equations and Hwang's quasi-power theorem to derive the asymptotic normality of the number of rotations needed to construct such afringe balanced search tree. We also obtain the exact expectation and variance with this method. Although Pólya's urn model is no longer needed, we also present an elegant analysis of it based on an operator calculus as in [4].This research was supported by the Austrian Research Society (FWF) under the project number P12599-MAT.     

NMR study of products of thermal transformation of substituted N-aryl-o-quinoneimines

Products of thermal transformation of substituted N-aryl-o-quinoneimines were studied using NMR spectroscopy. The formation of 4aH-phenoxazine, which was further dimerized by the Diels—Alder reaction, was established.     

Trace norm estimates for products of integral operators and diffusion semigroups

We give trace norm estimates for products of integral operators and for diffusion semigroups. These are applied to differences of heat semigroups. A natural example of an integral operator with finite trace which is not trace class is given.     

Flips and the Hilbert scheme over an exterior algebra

We study the tangent space at a monomial point M in the Hilbert scheme that parameterizes all ideals with the same Hilbert function as M over an exterior algebra.     

Explicit bounds on some new nonlinear integral inequalities with delay

The purpose of the present note is to establish some new delay integral inequalities, which provide explicit bounds on unknown functions and generalize some results of Li et al. [Some new delay integral inequalities and their applications, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 180 (2005) 191–200]. The inequalities given here can be used to investigate the qualitative properties of certain delay differential equations and delay integral equations.     

Symplectic Yang–Mills theory,Ricci tensor,and connections

A Yang–Mills theory in a purely symplectic framework is developed. The corresponding Euler–Lagrange equations are derived and first integrals are given. We relate the results to the work of Bourgeois and Cahen on preferred symplectic connections.     

Some results on controllability of a nonlinear degenerate parabolic system by bilinear control

In this paper, we discuss the controllability of a nonlinear degenerate parabolic system with bilinear control. Based on the shrinking property of the solutions, we prove that the system is not globally approximately controllable. Furthermore, we give an approximate null controllability result. We also prove that the system is not globally exactly null controllable by a comparison principle.
