Comparison of Differently Bound Molecules in the Gel and Subgel Phases of a Phospholipid Bilayer System

The thermal behavior associated with the melting of ice was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for the gel and L-subgel phases of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC)-water system of varying water contents up to a full hydration. By calorimetric analysis previously developed by us, the numbers of differently bound water molecules were estimated, and used to construct water distribution diagrams (i.e., a plot of the cumulative numbers of these water molecules vs. water content) for the two phases. A comparison of the diagrams revealed the critical role of interlamellar water which changes from freezable to non-freezable one in a conversion of the gel to the L-subgel phase by the thermal annealing. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

应用分子动力学方法模拟镁单晶在单向拉伸作用下的力学性能和微观结构演化过程.不同应变和不同温度下的模拟结果中都观测到{1011},{1012}型李晶.表明这两种孪晶是镁单晶拉伸变形的主要机制.其中{1012}型挛晶的产生伴随新晶粒生成,并且随应变增加孪晶的数量增加.此外,随着温度的增加,原子热激活效应显著.镁单晶的最大弹性形变减小,最大应力值亦变小.

Mass distribution principle is one of important tools in studying Hausdorff dimension and Hausdorff measure.In this paper we will give a numerical approximate method of upper bound and lower bound of mass distribution function f(x)(it is a monotone increasing fractal function)and its some applications.     

The effect of transformations on the approximation of univariate (convex) functions with applications to Pareto curves

In the literature, methods for the construction of piecewise linear upper and lower bounds for the approximation of univariate convex functions have been proposed. We study the effect of the use of transformations on the approximation of univariate (convex) functions. In this paper, we show that these transformations can be used to construct upper and lower bounds for nonconvex functions. Moreover, we show that by using such transformations of the input variable or the output variable, we obtain tighter upper and lower bounds for the approximation of convex functions than without these approximations. We show that these transformations can be applied to the approximation of a (convex) Pareto curve that is associated with a (convex) bi-objective optimization problem.     

The distribution of a generalized least squares estimator with covariance adjustment

The distribution theory is developed for a generalized least squares estimator of the growth curve model. A special case of the estimator is the maximum likelihood estimator which is weighted by the sample covariance matrix. The distribution of two conditional forms of the estimator are derived and from these its density is obtained. Two general pivots and their distributions are derived from the conditional forms and special cases of these are investigated. The results obtained are linked to carlier work.     

On Some Classical Methods to Improve Algebraic Curves and Surfaces

First, a modern presentation of the theory of the Halphen transform is given. This method associates to a plane projective curve C, once a general conic has been chosen, another birationally equivalent plane curve, whose singularities are simpler than those of C. Repeating, a curve is obtained whose only singularities are nodes. Next, it is studied how to apply this process to a family of plane curves. With this technique it is possible to transform a given family (with irreducible general member) into one where, generically, the curves are nodal. Finally, it is studied a similar process, called the Halphen–Picard transformation, for surfaces in three-space. By suitably reiterating this procedure, a surface can be transformed into a birationally equivalent one (in the same projective space), such that the sections with planes in a general pencil are, generically, nodal curves.
