Front-Form Hamiltonian, Path Integral, and BRST Formulations of the Nonlinear Sigma Model

The nonlinear sigma model in one-space one-time dimension is considered on the light-front. The front-form theory is seen to possess a set of three first-class constraints and consequently it possesses a local vector gauge symmetry. This is in contrast to the usual instant-form theory, which is well known to be a gauge noninvariant theory possessing a set of four second-class constraints. The front-form Hamiltonian, path integral, and BRST formulations of this theory are investigated under some specific gauge choices.     

Unitary Correlations and the Fejér Kernel

Let M be a unitary matrix with eigenvalues t _j , and let f be a function on the unit circle. Define X _f (M)=f(t _j ). We derive exact and asymptotic formulae for the covariance of X _f and X _g with respect to the measures |(M)|²dM where dM is Haar measure and an irreducible character. The asymptotic results include an analysis of the Fejér kernel which may be of independent interest.

Legendre Transformation for Regularizable Lagrangians in Field Theory

Hamilton equations based not only upon the Poincaré–Cartan equivalent of a first-order Lagrangian, but also upon its Lepagean equivalent are investigated. Lagrangians which are singular within the Hamilton–De Donder theory, but regularizable in this generalized sense are studied. Legendre transformation for regularizable Lagrangians is proposed and Hamilton equations, equivalent with the Euler–Lagrange equations, are found. It is shown that all Lagrangians affine or quadratic in the first derivatives of the field variables are regularizable. The Dirac field and the electromagnetic field are discussed in detail.     

Analysis of the Electronic Vibrational Spectra of Bisanthene by Calculating Normal Modes

At 4.2 K, the quasiline fluorescence and fluorescence-excitation spectra (in the region of the S ₁ S ₀- and S ₂ S ₀ transitions) of bisanthene in n-hexane have been obtained. Using the MO/M8ST method, the calculation of the A _g normal modes in the S ₀, S ₁, and S ₂ electronic states was carried out for the bisanthene molecule; the relative intensities of the transitions in the corresponding vibronic spectra were also calculated. The analysis of the results of calculations and experiment made it possible to draw conclusions on the form of the modes for a number of normal vibrations which are active in the bisanthene vibronic spectra.

Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians defined as quadratic forms

We study Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians-self-adjoint operators describing a small quantum system interacting with a bosonic field. Using quadratic form techniques, we extend the results of Dereziński-Gérard and Gérard about the self-adjointness, the location of the essential spectrum and the existence of a ground state to a large class of Pauli-Fierz Hamiltonians.     

Elliptic Equation and New Solutions to Nonlinear Wave Equations

The new solutions to elliptic equation are shown, and then the elliptic: equation is taken as a transformation and is applied to solve nonlinear wave equations. It is shown that more kinds of solutions are derived, such as periodic solutions of rational form, solitary wave solutions of rational form, and so on.     

A geometric characterisation of resonance in Hopf bifurcation from relative equilibria

We give a new characterisation of resonance in Hopf bifurcation from relative equilibria in systems with compact symmetry group. This characterisation provides a full geometric explanation of the resonance phenomenon. In addition, we develop techniques based on normal form theory to give a complete solution to the associated bifurcation problem.
