Two fluid approximations for multi-server queues with abandonments

Insight is provided into a previously developed M/M/s/r+M(n) approximation for the M/GI/s/r+GI queueing model by establishing fluid and diffusion limits for the approximating model. Fluid approximations for the two models are compared in the many-server efficiency-driven (overloaded) regime. The two fluid approximations do not coincide, but they are close.     

On the stability of the orthogonal Pexiderized Cauchy equation

We investigate the stability of Pexiderized mappings in Banach modules over a unital Banach algebra. As a consequence, we establish the Hyers-Ulam stability of the orthogonal Cauchy functional equation of Pexider type f₁(x+y)=f₂(x)+f₃(y), x⊥y in which ⊥ is the orthogonality in the sense of Rätz.     

A first-order continuous method for the Antipin regularization of monotone variational inequalities in a Banach space

The concept of a generalized projection operator onto a convex closed subset of a Banach space is modified. This operator is used to construct a first-order continuous method for the Antipin regularization of monotone variational inequalities in a Banach space. Sufficient conditions for the convergence of the method are found.     

On the classes of hereditarily ℓp Banach spaces

Let X denote a specific space of the class of X _α,p Banach sequence spaces which were constructed by Hagler and the first named author as classes of hereditarily ℓ_p Banach spaces. We show that for p > 1 the Banach space X contains asymptotically isometric copies of ℓ_p. It is known that any member of the class is a dual space. We show that the predual of X contains isometric copies of ℓ_p where 1/p + 1/q = 1. For p = 1 it is known that the predual of the Banach space X contains asymptotically isometric copies of c ₀. Here we give a direct proof of the known result that X contains asymptotically isometric copies of ℓ₁.     

Function spaces and product topologies on powers of spaces

A study is made of two classes of product topologies on powers of spaces: the general box product topologies, and the general uniform product topologies. Some examples are given and some results are shown about the properties of these general product spaces. This is applied to show that certain spaces of continuous functions with the fine topology are homeomorphic to box product spaces, and certain spaces of continuous functions with the uniform topology are homeomorphic to uniform product spaces.     

Symmetric family of Fredholm operators of indices zero, stability of essential spectra and application to transport operators

In this paper, we prove that, if the product A=A₁?An is a Fredholm operator where the ascent and descent of A are finite, then Aj is a Fredholm operator of index zero for all j, 1?j?n, where A₁,…,An be a symmetric family of bounded operators. Next, we investigate a useful stability result for the Rako?evi?/Schmoeger essential spectra. Moreover, we show that some components of the Fredholm domains of bounded linear operators on a Banach space remain invariant under additive perturbations belonging to broad classes of operators A such as γ(Am)<1 where γ(⋅) is a measure of noncompactness. We also discuss the impact of these results on the behavior of the Rako?evi?/Schmoeger essential spectra. Further, we apply these latter results to investigate the Rako?evi?/Schmoeger essential spectra for singular neutron transport equations in bounded geometries.     

A new characterization of <Emphasis Type="Italic">p</Emphasis>-smoothable Banach spaces

In this paper an atomic decomposition theorem for Banach-space-valued weak Hardy regular martingale space w _p H _α ^S (X) is given. As an application, p-smoothable Banach spaces are characterized in terms of bounded sublinear operators defined on Banach-space-valued weak Hardy regular martingale space w _p H _α ^S (X).
