For a closed symplectic manifold with compatible Riemannian metric g we study the Sobolev geometry of the group of all diffeomorphisms on M which preserve the symplectic structure. We show that, for sufficiently large s, the metric admits globally defined geodesics and the corresponding exponential map is a non-linear Fredholm map of index zero. The Kakutani–Bebutov Theorem (1968) states that any compact metric real flow whose fixed point set is homeomorphic to a subset of embeds into the Bebutov flow, the -shift on . An interesting fact is that this universal space is a function space. However, it is not compact, nor locally compact. We construct an explicit countable product of compact subspaces of the Bebutov flow which is a universal space for all compact metric real flows, with no restriction; namely, into which any compact metric real flow embeds. In this paper, we propose a model based on a new contravariant integral form of the fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations in order to simulate wave transformation phenomena, wave breaking, and nearshore currents in computational domains representing the complex morphology of real coastal regions. The aforementioned contravariant integral form, in which Christoffel symbols are absent, is characterized by the fact that the continuity equation does not include any dispersive term. A procedure developed in order to correct errors related to the difficulties of numerically satisfying the metric identities in the numerical integration of fully nonlinear Boussinesq equation on generalized boundary‐conforming grids is presented. The Boussinesq equation system is numerically solved by a hybrid finite volume–finite difference scheme. The proposed high‐order upwind weighted essentially non‐oscillatory finite volume scheme involves an exact Riemann solver and is based on a genuinely two‐dimensional reconstruction procedure, which uses a convex combination of biquadratic polynomials. The wave breaking is represented by discontinuities of the weak solution of the integral form of the nonlinear shallow water equations. The capacity of the proposed model to correctly represent wave propagation, wave breaking, and wave‐induced currents is verified against test cases present in the literature. Abstract A comparison and evaluation is made of recent proposals for multivariate matched sampling in observational studies, where the following three questions are answered: (1) Algorithms: In current statistical practice, matched samples are formed using “nearest available” matching, a greedy algorithm. Greedy matching does not minimize the total distance within matched pairs, though good algorithms exist for optimal matching that do minimize the total distance. How much better is optimal matching than greedy matching? We find that optimal matching is sometimes noticeably better than greedy matching in the sense of producing closely matched pairs, sometimes only marginally better, but it is no better than greedy matching in the sense of producing balanced matched samples. (2) Structures: In common practice, treated units are matched to one control, called pair matching or 1–1 matching, or treated units are matched to two controls, called 1–2 matching, and so on. It is known, however, that the optimal structure is a full matching in which a treated unit may have one or more controls or a control may have one or more treated units. Optimal 1 — k matching is compared to optimal full matching, finding that optimal full matching is often much better. (3) Distances: Matching involves defining a distance between covariate vectors, and several such distances exist. Three recent proposals are compared. Then, under different assumptions, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the ordering increasing property of the metric projection onto cones and order intervals are studied.
