On the number of Fourier coefficients that determine a Hilbert modular form

We estimate the number of Fourier coefficients that determine a Hilbert modular cusp form of arbitrary weight and level. The method is spectral (Rayleigh quotient) and avoids the use of the maximum principle.

     

Mechanical theorem proving in differential geometry

An automated reasoning method, based on Wu’s method and calculus of differential forms, is proposed for mechanical theorem proving in local theory of space surfaces in differential geometry. The method has been used to simplify one of Chem’s theorems: “The non-trivial families of isometric surfaces having the same principal curvatures are W-surfaces.” Some other theorems are also tested by this method. The proofs are generally simpler than those in differential geometry textbooks. Project supported partially by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.     

A remark on congruences for coefficients of Faber polynomials

Faber polynomials appear when weight zero Hecke operators act on the modular j-invariant. They are polynomials in j with rational integral coefficents. A Buzano type inequality for two Hermitian forms and applications

A Buzano type inequality for two nonnegative Hermitian forms is obtained. Applications to inequalities for norm and numerical radius of bounded linear operators in complex Hilbert spaces are given.     

Equivariant Sternberg–Chen Theorem

Smooth (C ) vector fields with linear symmetries and anti-symmetries are considered. We prove that provided symmetry group is compact then a smooth conjugacy in Sternberg–Chen Theorem can be chosen symmetric.     

空间静不定桁架的变形协调条件及求解

根据桁架受载后各杆件的伸长量、各杆件夹角的变化之间的几何关系，以各杆的伸长量和夹角的微小变化为未知量，建立了空间静不定桁架的变形协调条件，并结合实例给出了求解空间静不定桁架的一种计算方法．     

Normal Forms for High Co-Dimension Bifurcations of Nonlinear Time-Periodic Systems with Nonsemisimple Eigenvalues

The normal forms for time-periodic nonlinear variational equations witharbitrary linear Jordan form undergoing bifurcations of highco-dimension are found. First, the equations are transformed via theLyapunov–Floquet (L–F) transformation into an equivalent form in whichthe linear matrix is constant with degenerate nonsemisimple lineareigenvalues while the nonlinear monomials have periodic coefficients. Byconsidering the resulting coupling of the bases of the near identitytransformation, the solvability condition for an arbitrary Jordan matrixis then derived. It is shown that time-independent and/or time-dependentnonlinear resonance terms remain in the normal form for various Jordanmatrices. Specifically, the normal forms for quadratic and cubicnonlinearities with the following linear Jordan forms are explicitlyderived: double zero eigenvalues (co-dimension two bifurcation), triplezero eigenvalues (co-dimension three bifurcation), and two repeatedpairs of purely imaginary eigenvalues (co-dimension two bifurcation). Acommutative system with cubic nonlinearities and a double inverted pendulum with a periodicfollower force are used as illustrative examples.     

Unique Orbital Normal Form for Vector Fields of Hopf-Zero Singularity

Normal forms for vector fields of Hopf-zero singularity in R³ are studied. Multiple Lie bracket method is used to give unique normal forms under both conjugacy and orbital equivalence for such vector fields with a generic quadratic part.Dedicated to Professor Shui-Nee Chow on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
