Closed-form solutions for a mode III radial matrix crack penetrating a circular inhomogeneity

In this research we address in detail a mode III radial matrix crack penetrating a circular inhomogeneity. One tip of the radial crack lies in the matrix, while the other tip of the radial crack lies in the circular inhomogeneity. In addition the two tips of the crack are mutually image points (or inverse points) with respect to the circular inhomogeneity-matrix interface. First we conformally map the crack onto a unit circle C_a in the new ζ-plane. Meanwhile the inhomogeneity-matrix interface is mapped onto C_b, a part of another circle in the ζ-plane. In addition C_a and C_b intersect at a vertex angle π/2. By using the method of image in the ζ-plane, closed-form solutions in terms of elementary functions are derived for three loading cases: (1) remote uniform antiplane shearing; (2) a screw dislocation located in the unbounded matrix; and (3) a radial Zener–Stroh crack.     

Thermodynamic approach of spin-state excitations in LaCoO3

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity due to spin-state excitations in LaCoO₃ were analyzed with an irregular solution model composed of Co³⁺ ions in the low-spin ground state and in the high-spin excited state. An energy-levels diagram proposed by Ropka and Radvanskii [1] was used for the high-spin excited state. This analysis showed that the entropy of mixing is less than that of ideal solutions and the enthalpy of mixing is negative, indicating that the high-spin Co ions are arranged as far apart as possible.     

A new rational auxiliary equation method and exact solutions of a generalized Zakharov system

A new rational auxiliary equation method for obtaining exact traveling wave solutions of constant coefficient nonlinear partial differential equations of evolution is proposed. Its effectiveness is evinced by obtaining exact solutions of a generalized Zakharov system, some of which are new. It is shown that the G^′/G and the generalized projective Ricatti expansion methods are special cases of the auxiliary equation method. Further, due the solutions obtained, four other new and practicable rational methods are deduced.     

The least square nucleolus is a general nucleolus

This short note proves that the least square nucleolus (Ruiz et al. (1996)) and the lexicographical solution (Sakawa and Nishizaki (1994)) select the same imputation in each game with nonempty imputation set. As a consequence the least square nucleolus is a general nucleolus (Maschler et al. (1992)). Received: December 1998/Revised version: July 1999     

A fundamental solution to the Cauchy problem for a fourth-order pseudoparabolic equation

The Cauchy problem for a fourth-order pseudoparabolic equation describing liquid filtration problems in fissured media, moisture transfer in soil, etc., is studied. Under certain summability and boundedness conditions imposed on the coefficients, the operator of this problem and its adjoint operator are proved to be homeomorphism between certain pairs of Banach spaces. Introduced under the same conditions, the concept of a θ-fundamental solution is introduced, which naturally generalizes the concept of the Riemann function to the equations with discontinuous coefficients; the new concept makes it possible to find an integral form of the solution to a nonhomogeneous problem.

Two phase algorithms for the bi-objective assignment problem

In this paper, we present several algorithms for the bi-objective assignment problem. The algorithms are based on the two phase method, which is a general technique to solve multi-objective combinatorial optimisation (MOCO) problems.
