Franck–Condon factors are investigated for sequences of free main‐group diatomic molecules. Theory‐based Condon loci (parabolas) and Morse‐potential loci are plotted on Deslandres tables to verify if they, indeed, follow the largest Franck–Condon factors. Then, the inclination angles of the Condon loci are determined. Thus, entire band systems are quantified by one variable, the angle. For all available isoelectronic sequences, this angle increases from a central minimum toward magic‐number molecular boundaries. The theory for the Condon locus gives the angle in terms of the ratio of the upper‐state to the lower‐state force constants. It is concluded that the periodicity is caused due to the fact that this ratio becomes larger as rare‐gas molecules are approached, a trend that probably points to the extreme cases of the rare‐gas molecules themselves. Thus, molecular periodicity echoes atomic periodicity in that data plots have extrema at molecules with magic‐number atoms, yet it does not echo the details of atomic periodicity in series between those molecules. © 2013 The Authors. This self-contained note could find classroom use in an introductory course on analysis. It is proved that an ordered field F is complete (that is, order-isomorphic to the field of real numbers) if and only if each bounded monotonic sequence in F converges in F. Also established is the key tool that an ordered field is complete if and only if it is Archimedean and Cauchy-complete, along with a number of characterizations of Archimedean fields.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A key motivational tactic in undergraduate mathematics teaching is to launch topics with fundamental questions that originate from surprising or remarkable phenomena. Nonetheless, constructing a sequence of tasks that promotes students' own routes to resolving such questions is challenging. This note aims to address this challenge in two ways. First, to illustrate the motivational tactic, the taxicab manifestation of a locus attributed to Apollonius is introduced and a natural question arising from comparison with the analogous Euclidean locus is considered, namely, does the taxicab locus of Apollonius ever coincide with a taxicab circle? Second, a companion sequence of rich undergraduate tasks is elaborated using theoretical design principles, with the tasks culminating in this fundamental geometric question. This note therefore provides a design approach that can be replicated in undergraduate teaching contexts based around similarly motivating mathematical phenomena.  相似文献

Let C be an algebraic curve of genus g ≥ 2. A coherent system on C consists of a pair (E, V), where E is an algebraic vector bundle over C of rank n and degree d and V is a subspace of dimension k of the space of sections of E. The stability of the coherent system depends on a parameter α. We study the geometry of the moduli space of coherent systems for 0 < d ≤ 2n. We show that these spaces are irreducible whenever they are nonempty and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for nonemptiness.  相似文献

Lines of extrema along isotherms and isobars for the residual isochoric heat capacity, the residual isobaric heat capacity, the isobaric thermal expansivity, and the isothermal compressibility of the Lennard–Jones fluid have been studied from popular equations of state due to Johnson et al. [Mol. Phys. 78, 591 (1993)], Kolafa and Nezbeda [Fluid Phase Equilib. 100, 1 (1994)], and Mecke et al. [Int. J. Thermophys. 17, 391 (1996)]. On depicting such loci in the pressure–temperature plane, the characteristic behaviour of thermodynamic response functions in the ideal-gas limit (at high enough temperatures or low enough pressures), the close-packed-fluid limit (at low enough temperatures or high enough pressures) as well as in the liquid, critical, and supercritical regions is identified. The present analysis is informative itself, but it also stimulates further work in order to tackle more complicated cases of study including associated fluids.  相似文献

Bifurcation structures for nonlinear dynamical systems in a space of two parameters often display geometric shapes resembling shrimps. For one-dimensional maps with two parameters and multiple extrema, the underlying structure of the shrimps can be elucidated by computing the locus of superstable cycles which form a “skeleton” that supports the shrimps. Here we use continuation methods to identify and compute structures in two-dimensional maps that play the same role as the skeleton in one-dimensional maps. This facilitates determining the complex geometries for situations in which there is multistability, and for which the regions of parameter space supporting stable orbits get vanishingly small.  相似文献

根据复平面映射理论,详细讨论了结构振动系统的固有频率曲线在复平面的几何特点.研究表明,频率曲线重合和转向现象实际上可进行统一的几何描述.复参数平面中支点的形成是解释局部化现象和曲线转向现象的基础.利用近频摄动理论中的缩聚方法将系统降维,大大拓宽了这一几何方法的使用范围.计算实例验证了理论分析所得的结果.该文是对M.S,Tri-antafyllou等近期工作的改进与推广.  相似文献

The mixed-mode I + II interlaminar fracture of multidirectional glass/epoxy laminates is investigated. Mixed-mode bending (MMB) tests were performed on specimens with delaminations in 0/θ-type interfaces, with θ varying from 0 to 90°. Preliminary three-dimensional finite-element analyses validated the beam theory model (BTM) used for analysing experimental data. The compliances measured are in a good agreement with BTM predictions. The total critical energy release rate Gc varies linearly with the mode II ratio GII/G, although some discrepancies are observed in the high-mode II results for the 0/45 and 0/90 specimens.
