Finite element approximation of spatially extended predator–prey interactions with the Holling type II functional response

We study the numerical approximation of the solutions of a class of nonlinear reaction–diffusion systems modelling predator–prey interactions, where the local growth of prey is logistic and the predator displays the Holling type II functional response. The fully discrete scheme results from a finite element discretisation in space (with lumped mass) and a semi-implicit discretisation in time. We establish a priori estimates and error bounds for the semi discrete and fully discrete finite element approximations. Numerical results illustrating the theoretical results and spatiotemporal phenomena are presented in one and two space dimensions. The class of problems studied in this paper are real experimental systems where the parameters are associated with real kinetics, expressed in nondimensional form. The theoretical techniques were adapted from a previous study of an idealised reaction–diffusion system (Garvie and Blowey in Eur J Appl Math 16(5):621–646, 2005).     

Toeplitz Operators on Arveson and Dirichlet Spaces

We define Toeplitz operators on all Dirichlet spaces on the unit ball of and develop their basic properties. We characterize bounded, compact, and Schatten-class Toeplitz operators with positive symbols in terms of Carleson measures and Berezin transforms. Our results naturally extend those known for weighted Bergman spaces, a special case applies to the Arveson space, and we recover the classical Hardy-space Toeplitz operators in a limiting case; thus we unify the theory of Toeplitz operators on all these spaces. We apply our operators to a characterization of bounded, compact, and Schatten-class weighted composition operators on weighted Bergman spaces of the ball. We lastly investigate some connections between Toeplitz and shift operators. The research of the second author is partially supported by a Fulbright grant.     

Strain gradient plasticity solution for an internally pressurized thick-walled cylinder of an elastic linear-hardening material

An elastic-plastic solution is presented for an internally pressurized thick-walled plane strain cylinder of an elastic linear-hardening plastic material. The solution is derived in a closed form using a strain gradient plasticity theory. The inner radius of the cylinder enters the solution not only in non-dimensional forms but also with its own dimensional identity, which differs from that in classical plasticity based solutions and makes it possible to capture the size effect at the micron scale. The classical plasticity solution of the same problem is recovered as a special case of the current solution. To further illustrate the newly derived solution, formulas and numerical results for the plastic limit pressure are provided. These results reveal that the load-carrying capacity of the cylinder increases with decreasing inner radius at the micron scale. It is also seen that the macroscopic behavior of the pressurized cylinder can be well described by using classical plasticity based solutions.     

Semidirect products of lattices

The semidirect product of lattices is a lattice analogue of the semidirect product of groups. In this article we introduce this construction, show some basic facts and study a class of lattices closed under semidirect products. We also generalise this notion presenting the semidirect product of semilattices. Received February 22, 2005; accepted in final form August 29, 2006.     

Kreĭn–Saakyan and Trace Formulas for a Pair of Canonical Differential Operators

An analog of the Kreĭn–Saakyan formula is derived for any pair of relatively prime self-adjoint extensions of a minimal symmetric canonical differential operator. Numerical Properties of Shifted Tridiagonal LU Factorizations

In this paper, we consider shifted tridiagonal matrices. We prove that the standard algorithm to compute the LU factorization in this situation is mixed forward-backward stable and, therefore, componentwise forward stable. Moreover, we give a formula to compute the corresponding condition number in O(n) flops. On the Similarity of Analytic Matrix Functions

Consider a domain , and two analytic matrix-valued functions functions . Consider also points and positive integers n ₁, n ₂, . . . , n _N . We are interested in the existence of an analytic function such that X(ω) is invertible, and G(ω) coincides with X(ω)F(ω)X(ω)⁻¹ up to order n _j at the point ω _j . We will see that such a function exists provided that F(ω _j ),G(ω _j ) have cyclic vectors, and the characteristic polynomials of F,G coincide up to order n _j at ω _j . This allows one to give a short proof to a result of Huang, Marcantognini and Young concerning spectral interpolation in the unit disk. Existence for a degenerate diffusion problem with a nonlinear operator

We study a degenerate nonlinear variational inequality which can be reduced to a multivalued inclusion by an appropriate change of the unknown function. We establish existence, uniqueness and regularity results. An application arising in the theory of water diffusion in porous media is discussed as an example.
