We prove the existence of a continuous family of positive and generally nonmonotone travelling fronts for delayed reaction-diffusion equations , when gC2(R+,R+) has exactly two fixed points: x1=0 and x2=K>0. Recently, nonmonotonic waves were observed in numerical simulations by various authors. Here, for a wide range of parameters, we explain why such waves appear naturally as the delay h increases. For the case of g with negative Schwarzian, our conditions are rather optimal; we observe that the well known Mackey-Glass-type equations with diffusion fall within this subclass of (∗). As an example, we consider the diffusive Nicholson's blowflies equation.  相似文献

We prove that a sequence of positive integers (h0,h1,…,hc) is the Hilbert function of an artinian level module of embedding dimension two if and only if hi−1−2hi+hi+1≤0 for all 0≤ic, where we assume that h−1=hc+1=0. This generalizes a result already known for artinian level algebras. We provide two proofs, one using a deformation argument, the other a construction with monomial ideals. We also discuss liftings of artinian modules to modules of dimension one.  相似文献

In this work we investigate the natural algebraic structure that arises on dual spaces in the context of quantified functional analysis. We show that the category of absolutely convex modules is obtained as the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras induced by the dualization functor [−,R] on locally convex approach spaces. We also establish a dual adjunction between the latter category and the category of seminormed spaces.  相似文献

We consider solving eigenvalue problems or model reduction problems for a quadratic matrix polynomial 2 −  − B with large and sparse A and B. We propose new Arnoldi and Lanczos type processes which operate on the same space as A and B live and construct projections of A and B to produce a quadratic matrix polynomial with the coefficient matrices of much smaller size, which is used to approximate the original problem. We shall apply the new processes to solve eigenvalue problems and model reductions of a second order linear input-output system and discuss convergence properties. Our new processes are also extendable to cover a general matrix polynomial of any degree.  相似文献

We redefine the Baum-Connes assembly map using simplicial approximation in the equivariant Kasparov category. This new interpretation is ideal for studying functorial properties and gives analogues of the Baum-Connes assembly map for other equivariant homology theories. We extend many of the known techniques for proving the Baum-Connes conjecture to this more general setting.  相似文献

This paper establishes a link between a generalized matrix Matsumoto-Yor (MY) property and the Wishart distribution. This link highlights certain conditional independence properties within blocks of the Wishart and leads to a new characterization of the Wishart distribution similar to the one recently obtained by Geiger and Heckerman but involving independences for only three pairs of block partitionings of the random matrix.In the process, we obtain two other main results. The first one is an extension of the MY independence property to random matrices of different dimensions. The second result is its converse. It extends previous characterizations of the matrix generalized inverse Gaussian and Wishart seen as a couple of distributions.We present two proofs for the generalized MY property. The first proof relies on a new version of Herz's identity for Bessel functions of matrix arguments. The second proof uses a representation of the MY property through the structure of the Wishart.  相似文献

We consider normal ≡ Gaussian seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) with incomplete data (ID). Imposing a natural minimal set of conditional independence constraints, we find a restricted SUR/ID model whose likelihood function and parameter space factor into the product of the likelihood functions and the parameter spaces of standard complete data multivariate analysis of variance models. Hence, the restricted model has a unimodal likelihood and permits explicit likelihood inference. In the development of our methodology, we review and extend existing results for complete data SUR models and the multivariate ID problem.  相似文献

Parallel to Cox's [JRSS B34 (1972) 187-230] proportional hazards model, generalized logistic models have been discussed by Anderson [Bull. Int. Statist. Inst. 48 (1979) 35-53] and others. The essential assumption is that the two densities ratio has a known parametric form. A nice property of this model is that it naturally relates to the logistic regression model for categorical data. In astronomic, demographic, epidemiological, and other studies the variable of interest is often truncated by an associated variable. This paper studies generalized logistic models for the two-sample truncated data problem, where the two lifetime densities ratio is assumed to have the form exp{α+φ(x;β)}. Here φ is a known function of x and β, and the baseline density is unspecified. We develop a semiparametric maximum likelihood method for the case where the two samples have a common truncation distribution. It is shown that inferences for β do not depend the nonparametric components. We also derive an iterative algorithm to maximize the semiparametric likelihood for the general case where different truncation distributions are allowed. We further discuss how to check goodness of fit of the generalized logistic model. The developed methods are illustrated and evaluated using both simulated and real data.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to exhibit new infinite families of D-optimal (0, 1)-matrices. We show that Hadamard designs lead to D-optimal matrices of size (j, mj) and (j − 1, mj), for certain integers j ≡ 3 (mod 4) and all positive integers m. For j a power of a prime and j ≡ 1 (mod 4), supplementary difference sets lead to D-optimal matrices of size (j, 2mj) and (j − 1, 2mj), for all positive integers m. We also show that for a given j and d sufficiently large, about half of the entries in each column of a D-optimal matrix are ones. This leads to a new relationship between D-optimality for (0, 1)-matrices and for (±1)-matrices. Known results about D-optimal (±1)-matrices are then used to obtain new D-optimal (0, 1)-matrices.  相似文献

The oscillatory behavior of functions with compactly supported Fourier transform is characterized in a quantified way using various function spaces. In particular, the results in this article show that the oscillations of a function at large scale are comparable to the oscillations of its samples on an appropriate discrete set of points. Several open questions about spaces of sequences are answered and applications in the study of commutator operators on the Paley-Wiener space are shown. Acknowledgements and Notes.
