Convex hull of powers of a complex number,trinomial equations and the Farey sequence

The color of a complex number is defined as the number of vertices of the convex hull of powers of that number. This induces a coloring of the unit disk. The structure of the set of points where the color changes is investigated here. It is observed that there is a connection between this fractal set and some family of trinomial equations. Three algorithms for coloring the unit disk are described, the last one (related to the Farey sequence) arising out of a conjecture. This conjecture is formulated and proved in this presentation.     

A preconditioned domain decomposition algorithm for the solution of the elliptic Neumann problem

A new preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG)-based domain decomposition method is given for the solution of linear equations arising in the finite element method applied to the elliptic Neumann problem. The novelty of the proposed method is in the recommended preconditioner which is constructed by using cyclic matrix. The resulting preconditioned algorithms are well suited to parallel computation.     

Convergence to equilibrium of critical branching particle systems and superprocesses,and related nonlinear partial differential equations

We consider a class of multitype particle systems in ^d undergoing spatial diffusion and critical stable multitype branching, and their limits known as critical stable multitype Dawson-Watanabe processes, or superprocesses. We show that for large classes of initial states, the particle process and the superprocess converge in distribution towards known equilibrium states as time tends to infinity. As an application we obtain the asymptotic behavior of a system of nonlinear partial differential equations whose solution is related to the distribution of both the particle process and the superprocess.Research partially supported by CONACyT (Mexico), CNRS (France) and BMfWuF (Austria).     

Algebraic models defined over Q of differential manifolds

Here we prove that every compact differential manifold has a smooth algebraic model defined over Q. In dimension 2 we find an algebraic model (may be singular) defined over Q and birational over Q to the projective plane.

On suppose que les cocycles ₁ ^* et ₂ ^* définissent la même classe bornée. Que peut-on en conclure sur ₁ et ₂?Par ailleurs, l'article [At l] traite aussi d'invariants sur SL(2,) différents de ceux que nous avons considérés, comme par exemple les fonctionsL de Shimizu. Est-il possible de les faire rentrer naturellement dans notre cadre?

Spline collocation for strongly elliptic equations on the torus

Summary We prove convergence and error estimates in Sobolev spaces for the collocation method with tensor product splines for strongly elliptic pseudodifferential equations on the torus. Examples of applications include elliptic partial differential equations with periodic boundary conditions but also the classical boundary integral operators of potential theory on torus-shaped domains in three or more dimensions. For odd-degree splines, we prove convergence of nodal collocation for any strongly elliptic operator. For even-degree splines and midpoint collocation, we find an additional condition for the convergence which is satisfied for the classical boundary integral operators. Our analysis is a generalization to higher dimensions of the corresponding analysis of Arnold and Wendland [4].

Asymptotic dynamics of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with many bound states

We consider a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a bounded localized potential in . The linear Hamiltonian is assumed to have three or more bound states with the eigenvalues satisfying some resonance conditions. Suppose that the initial data is localized and small of order n in H¹, and that its ground state component is larger than n^3−ε with ε>0 small. We prove that the solution will converge locally to a nonlinear ground state as the time tends to infinity.
