We show in this article that there exists conjugate points at infinity in infinite dimensional Teichmüller spaces.     

On the usage of NURBS as interface representation in free‐surface flows

When simulating free‐surface flows using the finite element method, there are many cases where the governing equations require information which must be derived from the available discretized geometry. Examples are curvature or normal vectors. The accurate computation of this information directly from the finite element mesh often requires a high degree of refinement—which is not necessarily required to obtain an accurate flow solution. As a remedy and an option to be able to use coarser meshes, the representation of the free surface using non‐uniform rational B‐splines (NURBS) curves or surfaces is investigated in this work. The advantages of a NURBS parameterization in comparison with the standard approach are discussed. In addition, it is explored how the pressure jump resulting from surface tension effects can be handled using doubled interface nodes. Numerical examples include the computation of surface tension in a two‐phase flow as well as the computation of normal vectors as a basis for mesh deformation methods. For these examples, the improvement of the numerical solution compared with the standard approaches on identical meshes is shown. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A note on commutators of Hardy operators

Fu and Lu et al. 7 showed that the commutator $\mathcal {H}_{\beta ,b}$ generated by the fractional Hardy operator and a locally integrable function b is bounded on the homogenous Herz spaces if and only if b is a central bounded mean oscillation function. We show that their result is optimal by giving a counterexample.     

Functions averages over the roots of unity,cauchy problems and addition formulas

An averaging operator over the roots of unity is defined on a class of analytic functions and its algebraic and analytic properties are investigated. A Cauchy like integral formula for this is obtained. This operator and its properties are then employed to solve higher order Cauchy problems, to derive addition formulas for hypergeometric functions and to obtain integral representations for special classes of hypergeometric functions.     

Quantum Pfaffians and hyper-Pfaffians

The concept of the quantum Pfaffian is rigorously examined and refurbished using the new method of quantum exterior algebras. We derive a complete family of Plücker relations for the quantum linear transformations, and then use them to give an optimal set of relations required for the quantum Pfaffian. We then give the formula between the quantum determinant and the quantum Pfaffian and prove that any quantum determinant can be expressed as a quantum Pfaffian. Finally the quantum hyper-Pfaffian is introduced, and we prove a similar result of expressing quantum determinants in terms of quantum hyper-Pfaffians at modular cases.     

On solitary wave solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with two parameters

In this paper, we discuss the existence and multiplicity of positive solitary wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with two parameters. The proof is based on the method of upper and lower solutions and the fixed point index.

Nonexistence of global solutions to new ordinary differential inequality and applications to nonlineardispersive equations

A new ordinary differential inequality without global solutions is proposed. Comparison with similar differential inequalities in the well‐known concavity method is performed. As an application, finite time blow up of the solutions to nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation and generalized Boussinesq equation is proven. The initial energy is arbitrary high positive. The structural conditions on the initial data generalize the assumptions used in the literature for the time being. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Characterization of embeddings of Sobolev-type spaces into generalized Hölder spaces defined by Lp-modulus of smoothness

We prove a sharp estimate for the k-modulus of smoothness, modelled upon a $L^p$-Lebesgue space, of a function f in $W^k{L}^{\frac{pn}{n+kp},p}(\mathrm{\Omega })$, where Ω is a domain with minimally smooth boundary and finite Lebesgue measure, $k,n\in \mathbb{N}$, $k<n$ and $\frac{n}{n?k}<p<+\infty$. This sharp estimate is used to establish necessary and sufficient conditions for continuous embeddings of Sobolev-type spaces into generalized Hölder spaces defined by means of the k-modulus of smoothness. General results are illustrated with examples. In particular, we obtain a generalization of the classical Jawerth embeddings.
